Thanks Karen for helping me summit Katadin, and complete my goal.

I couldn't leave the bug at "Sights to Bewhole" because there isn't a physical cache there, but I did want to give it a waypoint as it meeting it's goal. Congratulations to the bug and read it's goal attaining adventure in pictures, as posted below.

    • A view This view is part way up Chimney Pond trail. We changed our hiking plans so that we could do a loop and get back to our car. We are looking at the Howe Peaks above the North Basin.
    • An easy walk On the way to Chimney Pond Campground, we had some easy walking compared to what was ahead of us. The travel bug had the easiest time because it was traveling in my backpack!
    • A morning view of Knife Edge The color is funny in this picture because it's morning and we are standing in a "bowl" type area. That is where we will be hiking after the travel bug gets to Baxter Peak on Katahdin.
    • Chimney Pond Sign This will give you our elevation at Chimney Pond Campsite (an additional 2100 to go) and some information. You have to hike to this campsite. We filtered water here and got ready for the hard part of the hike.
    • Cathedral Trail This is one hard climb! You have to pick your way up rocks and pull yourself up. It was my daughter's favorite part. My legs were pretty tired after this. The top part is loose rock that was hard to walk on.
    • View of Chimney Pond My friend who is "tat" (also known as MainePublisher) was on the trip with us. We stopped here to do a little research on, hopefully, a future Earth Cache. We are looking down at Chimney Pond from Cathedral Trail.
    • Katahdin or Bust! Yahoo, the travel bug meets it's goal and what a great day for it! We only had one day to do this and we were so lucky with the weather (although it was a bit too hot). We made it to the peak at 11:30 am after 5 hours of hiking.
    • We made it! My daughter, tat, and Kaching Karen at the top of Katahdin at Baxter Peak. We still have the hardest part of the hike to do; the Knife Edge. So it's time for a nice break.
    • Cairn at Baxter Peak Baxter Peak is 5271 feet above sea level. This is just short of a mile. The joke is that you need to add a stone to the cairn to make the peak a mile high! There were lots of people there relaxing and enjoying the view. We think there was one Appalachian Trail thru-hiker there. My sister finished her International Appalachian Trail hike on Baxter Peak.
    • The Knife Edge Now the real work begins! The travel bug and the three of us crawled, walked, trembled in fear, across this area called the Knife Edge. This was my third time doing it, but it was very scarey, just the same. This was tat's favorite part of the trail.
    • Helon Taylor Trail After the Knife Edge we went down the Helon Taylor Trail. It seems we just continued crawling down rocks forever! We finished our hike at 5:00 pm after 10.5 hours on the trail. It was a great time and I am glad your travel bug met it's goal.
    • Relief May This relief map sits on the deck of the Ranger Station at Roaring Brook campground. It gives a good idea of how steep the trails are that we took. Remember, we went up Chimney Pond Trail, to Cathedral Trail, a bit of Hunt Trail (AT) to Baxter Peak, on to the Knife Edge, and then down Helon Taylor Trail. What fun!

The travel bug plans on summiting Kahtadin on July 8th! Do you like reading maps? Check out the Hunt Trail, across the Knife Edge and back down the Taylor Trail. It's quite a day's work.

Grab It (Not from a Cache) 3/23/2008 Kaching Karen grabbed it   Visit Log

It's a little early to hike Kahtadin, but I do it now and then. Do you want me to hold on to this until June? I will be hiking the mountain this summer, but it doesn't open up to hikers until June 15th.

Grabbing this one from our friends, the Mattina Family Seekers. Hope to move it along close to its destination soon. Team Pinepoint (Maine)

We sadly lost this TB shortly after getting it and when we moved to Arizona it was rediscovered in a certain child's toychest. (Hmmmmm...). We are so sorry it took us so long to move this along but are happy that we did in fact find it.
