About This Item

TB

This is a model of a Whitworth Cannon. Imported from England by both North and South, only the Confederacy actively used these unique guns in the field. Designed by Sir Joseph Whitworth and imported from England, it fired an elongated 12-pound iron shell which fit snugly into the fine rifling of the tube. It was also unusual in that it was a breechloader. A locking ring around the breech allowed the end of the gun to be opened so that the shell and powder charge could be loaded through the breech. The gun's unusual shape and distinctive shells were a curiosity when compared to other ordnance, though they were extremely accurate and could fire a solid shot almost 5 miles. Though the Whitworth cannon was very accurate, it had a myriad of problems with the breech mechanism which made it unpopular during the war. The accuracy of this cannon can be appreciated in this video of one of them being fired at old cars resulting in some very impressive explosions. A detailed video of a Whitworth cannon on display at Gettysburg can be viewed here.

Retrieved this on a beautiful, sunny day from a cache near many German WW2 fortifications in Molde, Norway. Let's where it lands next...!

Not a battlefield or at all related to the civil war, but a WWII coastal fortification will have to suffice for the time being. Have made some repairs to the wheels on the cannon, so it is in prime condition again.

Langt hjemmefra den her, men skal i hvert fall ta den med et annet sted.
