About This Item

B-36 Peacemaker at Pima Air Museum, Arizona

The B-36 Peacemaker was the largest American bomber ever produced. It was built by Convair and operated by the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1959. It was the primary nuclear weapons delivery vehicle of Strategic Air Command. Its 230 foot wingspan was almost fifty percent longer than that of the B-52 that replaced it.  During its years of service, it was one of America's major deterrents to aggression by a potential enemy. It is famous for never having fired a shot in anger.

Apart from the earliest models, the B-36 had ten engines, six radial propeller engines and four jet engines, leading to the B-36 slogan of "six turnin' and four burnin' ". The jet engines were used during takeoff and for dash speed over the target. In normal cruising flight, the jet engines were shut down to conserve fuel.

Development of the plane began in 1941 when it appeared that Great Britain would soon fall to Nazi Germany. The Army Air Force wanted a bomber that could fly from the United States to Europe, drop bombs, and return without refueling. The prototype first flew on 8 August 1946. The first operational models were delivered to the Strategic Air Command in 1948.

The Peacemaker achieved its objective. Its combat radius with a 10,000-pound payload (one small nuclear bomb) was 3,740 nautical miles.  With its maximum bomb load of 86,000 pounds, its combat radius decreased to 1,757 nautical miles.

A total of 388 B-36 aircraft were produced.  The last one was built in August of 1954, “City of Fort Worth”.  On 29 June 1955 the first B-52 was delivered to Strategic Air Command. The all-jet bombers later took over the Peacemakers’ duties. The last B-36 was retired in 1959.
