About This Item

The Real Atlas

As my favorite pitbull ambassador, the real Three Legged Pit, Atlas, has done a mountain of work in getting the word out that "we are not bad dogs!"

I rescued Atlas when she was about 6 months old. She had been hit by a car, neglected, then left for dead. She was brought into the hospital I was working at, where most "strays" that are found this way, especially pit bulls and similar "aggressive" breeds (haha!) are simply euthanized. For some reason, the doctors I was working with didn't even hesitate to jump in and care for her. There was no doubt the leg needed to be amputated, and she was a good candidate for it.

I was able to restrain myself the first couple of days, until she was finally nursed back to health enough to go through the surgery. As she was waking up from the anesthesia, I realized that THIS WAS MY DOG! Where have you been all of my life, beautiful?! Her recovery was fast... she was up and running within days, and at one month post-surgery, she was as physically capable as her 4-legged friends.

Atlas is now about 4 years old. Her landmarks are amazing... and every day she amazes me more. First she learned to run, and then learned how to run up and down stairs, then came swimming... she's a fish! She has a healthy selection of "tricks" that she will always do for a treat, such as sit, sit up, stand up, shake, high 5 (yes, she can shake and high 5 with her one front paw and not fall over!), she can also dance like a circus dog, and crawl on her belly. She greets every friendly person with a giant smile (especially first thing in the morning) and will lick your tonsils out of you're not careful.

She's the best dog in the world! In addition to our usual romping and hiking, she has now turned geo-pooch, and accompanys us out and about frequently (and even has her OWN cache!).

Retrived Geo-Atlas about 1:30pm today from a charming little natural area. Although we aren't dog owners, we ARE animal lovers, and have 3 ferrets (Draper, Klaus and Manfred) and a cat (Ernie) that we share our life and love with. Your pooches story is very touching! Thank you for sharing it with us!

We are going to take some pictures of Geo-Atlas this week to share with you. He is so adept with three legs that we didn't even notice he was missing one until we got him home.

  • A meal and a hot bath Well, he wasn't that interested in a bath, but we made sure Geo-Atlas was well fed!
  • And dessert... Mmmmm.... beefy!
  • Elkmilk's generosity A prior cacher loaded these goodies into Geo-Atlas's backpack. Thought his owner would like to know that he's being provided for at every stage of the way!
  • Dogs of a feather... See the cache log for Chandler Pond Troll (GC8CE2) for a few more pix of us!

What in the world was a 3-legged pit bull doing up a tree? Our doggy demanded a friend for the remainder of the day, so Atlas tagged along with us, going geocaching in northern Oregon. He loved the exercise! Elkmilk's additions to his backpack (a snack and some spending money) were so cute that we couldn't bring ourselves to change them out. They'll keep traveling with Atlas. Couldn't lay our paws on a digital camera today, so Atlas will visit with our doggy for a while, then after they've had a photo op, will head back out onto the open road.

Elkmilk Here

We found this dog at Its My Party. I also found alittle note in its backpack that was wet. I'm drying it out and well put it back. I noticed that Geo-Atlas was low on funds and I figured all the places he well be going he might need some spending money. So I'm going to add a Indianhead Penny into his little backpack. I also packed him a very small doggy bone lunch.

Thanks

Elkmilk
