My mission is to wander, meet others of my kind, have the occasional photo taken and eat plenty of cycads and ferns.
Triceratops is one of the most famous and distictive of all the dinosaurs. It lived at the very end of the Cretaceous period up to the time of the Chicxulub impact. Judging by the number of fossils, it was the most numerous dinosaur in the continental US, ranging as far North as Saskatchewan and Alberta in Canada, down through Montana, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico in the US.
The first fossils were discovered by the team of Edward Cope, but they were of such poor quality that he thought they were from a bison. It was his arch rival, Othniel Marsh who named Triceratops(three horned face) in 1889. Only two species of Triceratops are officially established, T.horridus and T.prorsus, with another seven designations considered doubtful due to the poor quality of the specimens.
Triceratops belongs to the family Ceratopsidae(horned face), thought to have evolved from Psittacosaurus - a bipedal dinosaur - and Protoceratops, which are found in Mongolia. So it seems that the Ceratopsids moved East as they evolved and reverted to a four-legged gait.
Triceratops were herbivorous and replaced their teeth throughout their lives. They had up to 80 batteries of teeth in each jaw, stacked up 5 deep, which means they had up to 800 teeth! This leads paleobiologists to conclude that Triceratops fed on low, fibrous material like ferns and cycads.
