About This Item

The Cycle of Life

The Celtic Triangle

The Celtic Triangle is a symbol also known under the names The Celtic Triad Symbol and triquetra. It has roots in Celtic, Germanic and also Christian cultures. The triangle consists from three leaf-like shapes, positioned in a way the bottoms are placed in the centre of the symbol and the tops forming a triangle. They are commonly binded by a ring.

It can be seen in the Book of Kells (an illuminated manuscript from an Island of Iona from around year 800 AD) and also in early Celtic stone slabs and carvings. It can also be found in Northern Europe on Rune stones and on early Germanic coins. It bears the resemblance to the Valknut, a symbol that is associated with the Norse god Odin

The exact meaning is unknown. In Christianity it represent the Trinity (The Father, The Son and The Holy spirit, three persons as one God). In Celtic it may referred to the triad Maiden, Mother and Crone. But it could also represent the tree Brigids (goddess, who embodied healing, the arts and metal smithing).

Several new religions have adopted the symbol as the symbol for a triad. The Wiccan tradition uses it to represent the Mother earth. For the Neo-Pagans it represents maiden, mother and crone. For the New Agers it is a representation of the mind, body and soul. It can also represent past, present and future.
