Maribor je štajerska prestolnica in drugo največje slovensko mesto (96.000 prebivalcev, 275 mnm).
Mesto ima bogato zgodovino, ki sega v leto 1164, ko se omenja grad, leta 1209 kot naselje ter leta 1254 kot mesto. Zaradi strateške lege se je Maribor hitro razvijal, postal je pomembno industrijsko središče in živahno turistično mesto. Na vrh 375 metrov visokega mestnega griča Kalvarija se lahko povzpnete po znamenitih »štengah«, ki so še posebej priljubljeno sprehajališče in rekreacijska točka domačinov. Na vrhu nas pričaka več presenečenj. Poleg čudovitega razgleda so tam tudi fitnes na prostem in odlična igrala za otroke.
Stopnice so bile zgrajene leta 1956 s strani mariborske kmetijske šole kot dopolnitev učne sadjarsko - vinogradniške poti. Vsako leto je po stopnicah organiziran tradicionalni nočni tek. Start teka je na ploščadi pod stopnicami na Kalvarijo, od koder tekmovalce čaka vzpon po 454 stopnicah z dolžino 210 metrov in višinsko razliko 80 metrov. Povprečen naklon proge znaša 20°. Rekord proge je 1:41 iz leta 2021.

Cerkev na Kalvariji: N 46°34.143 , E 015° 38.388
Na vrhu stoji cerkev sv. Barbare, ki so jo med letoma 1681 in 1683 postavili v zahvalo pred kugo rešeni Mariborčani. Cerkev je enoladijska s triosminskim zaključkom (zgrajena v baročnem slogu). Nad vhodno fasado ima stolpič s čebulasto streho. Fasade členijo pilastri, vzhodno fasado pa še kamnita reliefna kompozicija Križanja, delo Ivana Sojča iz leta 1933. Na zunanji strani prezbiterija stoji na konzoli kip sv. Jožefa z detetom, delo kiparja Jožeta Strauba iz prve polovice 18. stoletja.
Na steni prezbiterija je nad oltarjem naslikan oltarni nastavek v fresko tehniki, delo slikarja Andrea Wassemuetha iz leta 1815. Njegovo delo sta tudi sliki naslikani na stenah ladje. V cerkveni notranjščini je spravljen kamnit kip iz peščenjaka Jezus pade pod križem, delo baročnaga kiparja Jožefa Strauba.
Cerkev je bila prvič obnovljena med letoma 1814 in 1815. V 19. stoletju v času narodnostnega prebujenja, je Kalvarija postala simbol nemštva v mestu - prijelo se je je ime "nemška Kalvarija".
Leta 1683 je bil na Kalvarijo urejen tudi križev pot, po katerem je grič dobil ime. V bližini cerkve je moč uživati v čudovitem razgledu na Maribor, reko Dravo in mariborsko Pohorje.

At the top stands the Church of St. Barbara, which was built between 1681 and 1683 as a thanksgiving by the Maribor residents saved from the plague. The church is single-nave with a three-sided closure (built in the Baroque style). Above the entrance façade, there is a small tower with an onion-shaped roof. The façades are articulated by pilasters, and the eastern façade also features a stone relief composition of the Crucifixion, the work of Ivan Sojč from 1933. On the outer side of the presbytery stands a statue of St. Joseph with the Child on a console, the work of the sculptor Jože Straub from the first half of the 18th century.
On the wall of the presbytery, above the altar, is a painted altarpiece in fresco technique, the work of the painter Andrea Wassemueth from 1815. His work also includes paintings on the walls of the nave. Inside the church is a carved sandstone statue of Jesus falling under the Cross, the work of the Baroque sculptor Jožef Straub.
The church was first renovated between 1814 and 1815. In the 19th century, during the period of national awakening, Calvary became a symbol of Germanism in the city - it became known as "German Calvary".
