serotine, close you'r eyes
& ears, this is not for you to read, my apologies. 'NEWT-
NAPPING' IS NEVER TO BE DONE! they are highly protected.
Many years ago, I came here
as a young lad in the 1970's and fished for newts. It was harmless
(honest), we would dangle in a worm, they would bite it and not let
go, so greed was to be their downfall as we pulled them out one by
one.
I was fascinated by them,
with their spotty bellies and funny hands, like little dinosaurs
they were.
But just the odd one was
not good enough, so one day, with a packed lunch and a free
afternoon I set about catching (sorry!) about 20 - 30 of the little
chaps and took them all home in a jar in my rucksack and a mile or
two home on my bike. ( ... Jester, can you pick soretine up off the
floor please)
Miraculously they all survived and I made a makeshift pond out of a
polystyrene box, but next day , they were all gone. Where to, I
have no idea. So if the greater crested newt is extinct here now it
is all my fault.
BUT, one was left behind,
and he is called Tiny .. why? because he is
mynewt! and when you find him, press his tummy down to hear his
pitifully lonely cry, calling to friends that will never come back.
(NOTE: if this turns out to be a prosecutable offence even 30+years
ago, then it is all fiction m'lord)
