Geocache Description:

The de Havilland Cache

The cache is located near the Canadian Air Space Museum at Downsview Park
There is plenty of parking near the cache. There are a lot of muggles around as a result of the close proximity to the Museum and the various businesses and activities that go on in the park. Stealth is highly advised!

Congrats to Fababoo for First-to-Find!

The Canadian Air & Space Museum was founded in 1997 and is an important year-round attraction within Downsview Park, Canada’s first National Urban Park which is managed by the federal government. The Museum is located in a building that isn’t just full of history, it’s part of history. From the days of wood and fabric open cockpit biplanes of the 1920’s, to the dawn of the space age in the 1960s.

The building is the original 1929 home of The de Havilland Aircraft of Canada Ltd., (one of Canada’s most successful aircraft manufacturers) and also the original home of Canada’s leading space technology company best known as SPAR.

The site contains the oldest surviving aircraft factory in Canada, and the birthplace of the famous Beaver and Otter bush planes which opened the Canadian North and were sold to customers in 65 countries. It’s also where de Havilland engineers assembled and tested the first Canadian satellite, Alouette I, which established Canada as the third nation in space when launched in 1962. The Downsview site also shares the distinction of being the home of one of the world's leading commercial aircraft factories, and was Toronto’s air force base for 50 years.

In this unique and authentic setting, Canadian Air & Space Museum celebrates the aerospace accomplishments of Canadians, and the long association of Canada with aeronautical innovation, aircraft manufacturing, military aviation, air transport and the pure joy of flight.

While the Canadian Air & Space Museum prides itself on telling the distinctly Canadian stories of aerospace science and technology, it equally tells the stories of the people connected to these innovations. In doing so, the museum is not only chronicling their achievements, it is honouring these larger than life pioneers. Source: "Canadian Air and Space Museum website"

The Cache

The cache is in a lock-n-lock camo canister.

Initially placed inside the cache is a logbook, pencil and Canadian Flags.

To initiate the cache there is a travel bug  - Avro Lancaster Mark X FM104.

Inside the museum the restoration of  Lancaster Mark X FM-104 is underway.

Many of us remember the Lancaster on its pedestal near the Canadian National Exhibition as shown below.

FM104 was maintained under the auspices of Heritage Toronto, who, in 1998 recognized that over thirty years of exposure to the elements, wildlife, and vandals were threatening to completely destroy the venerable aircraft. A competition to find a new indoor home for FM104 ended not far from where it started, when the fledgling Toronto Aerospace Museum was chosen. Located in Downsview Park, the same place where the Lancaster Retirement Ceremony was held in 1964, and not far from where FM104 first rolled off the assembly lines at Victory Aircraft over a half century earlier, the Toronto Aerospace Museum was the most appropriate choice.

At present, FM104 is undergoing a complete restoration by a volunteer crew at TAM, where the aircraft is displayed as an open exhibit. The restoration and preservation process is estimated to take ten to fifteen years to complete and to cost approximately three-quarters of a million dollars. Upon its completion, Lancaster FM104 will reaffirm its role as a memorial to Canada’s airmen of the Second World War, for the appreciation and enjoyment of many generations.

To commemorate this effort we have attached a pewter model of the Lancaster to the travel bug.

Please move it along so that is can make its way across Canada and hopefully to Europe.

In addition there are Canadian Flag pins. If you take a flag, please leave a flag or a pin in its place, preferably with an airplane theme.

Make sure you leave yourself time to visit the museum. It is well worth the visit.
