Geocache Description:

Michael's House

The cache was created to honour Michael Cranny, one of Maple's founding families. It is an easy walk to the cache and there is plenty of parking around.

Congrats to RH2 and strega13 for First-to-Find!

Michael Cranny - One of the Early Settlers in Vaughan and King Townships of York County, Ontario Before 1834

Michael Cranny, Sr. Native of Co. Carlow, Ireland, was most probably born in the last quarter of the 1700's . The name of his wife is not known and has never been mentioned in any document regarding the family discovered in Ontario to date.

It is likely that his wife likely died in Ireland and Michael emigrated from Co. Carlow as a widower with his 6 grown and semi grown children.

Various branches of this family lived in York County, Simcoe County and Grey County, Ontario through the years and the generations following their immigration to Canada.

The family farm was located on what is now the north/east corner of Jane and Major Mackenzie. The actual homestead is located at 439 Glenkindie Ave. Maple.

Michael Cranny Elementary School was named in his honour and is located at 155 Melville Ave, on part of the original farm site.
