Geocache Description:

Welcome to downtown Middlefield!

The quaint little village of Middlefield sits within the Geauga County township of the same name.  It is the center of the fourth largest Amish settlement in the world.  Seeing these people dressed in their plain clothes and riding in their horse-drawn buggies is almost like traveling back in time when things were much simpler.

This cache will also take you back in time so that you can see Middlefield as it was in its early days, when flying a kite or riding a bike was so much more satisfying than spending half the day playing video games.  A trip down to the corner drugstore could take up the entire day as you did some shopping, visited with neighbors, got caught up on the local gossip, and savored a delicious ice cream soda made fresh at the fountain.

At the posted coordinates you will find a beautiful mural on the outside wall of the local tavern.  The mural depicts the center of Middlefield as it appeared around the years 1900 to 1910.  Amazingly this wonderful piece of art was created by a group of young students who had just finished the eighth grade!  It was the brainchild of Brandon Templeton, who decided that this area could use a little sprucing up after a building was ripped down to make room for the right turn lane on Route 87.

Brandon designed the painting, and along with his fellow students, presented it to the town council, and received approval to paint the wall.  He was joined by Jeremy Bratnick, Corey Wright, and Rachel DeMay, who did the bulk of the painting, and Aneisa Poole, Colleen Bosler, Sara Wolfert, and Melissa Berkebile, who assisted on the project.  The entire mural was completed during the summer of 2001 under the supervision of the Cardinal Middle and High School art teacher, Christie King.  When it was finished, the wall was treated with a special chemical coating to preserve it for many years to come.

UPDATE:  After 22 years, the painting was finally showing major effects of time and weather, so a local artist was hired to reproduce the original mural at the same location.  Bill Mast worked on the mural throughout the summer and the re-created painting was unveiled on October 17, 2023.  This update should make the details much easier to spot, but the artist also made a few minor changes that caused the puzzle to require a couple of small adjustments.

In order to find this cache, you will need to look closely at this painting and pick out the details listed below.

The final cache coordinates are: N 41° 27.PQR  W 081° 05.STU

The cache is a short drive away.  The trip from this spot to the final location will bring you back to the present, and show you how Middlefield has grown and progressed in the last 100 years.  I'm not sure if I would consider a string of fast food restaurants and a Wal*Mart to be progress though.

P = the number of horses plus the number of dogs that are seen in the picture – 2
Q = the third digit in the number on the front of the train
R = the number of men in the picture who have obvious beards – 1
S = the number of picnickers sitting on the blanket plus the number of people riding a bike
T = the number of people holding on to a kite plus the number of people fishing in the creek
U = the sum of the two digits in the number on the trolley car (interurban railroad)

This cache is one of six in a series that you will need to find to determine the final coordinates of "70's One-Hit Wonders: Have a Nice Day!" Each of these six caches contains a set of lyrics from a song that was made popular by a one-hit wonder group or solo artist in the 1970's. All of the lyric clues can be found in the log sheets. Using this small section of the song, you must determine the song title and ultimately the year that the song reached its highest position on Billboard magazine's Top 40 list. The last digit of that year will be the number you seek to gain the final cache's coordinates.

Although some of the songs may have been remade by contemporary artists, each song was originally made popular in the 1970's, and the year of its popularity is what you must find. Please do not give away any of the lyrics, song titles, or years in your logs or they may be deleted! However, if you had a favorite song by a one-hit wonder of the 1970's, or just a favorite 1970's song in general, please feel free to mention it in your find log.

All of these caches were placed in October of 2006, to commemorate the year of Geauga County's bicentennial. I hope you enjoy your caching journey through the beautiful and historic Geauga County. Watch for the special bicentennial banners as you make your way between cache locations. If you find all of the caches in the series, including the final, you will have visited at least six of the sixteen townships in Geauga County, including a trip through Middlefield Village.

Note that some of the hints for these caches are actually song titles from 70's one-hit wonders, along with their year of popularity. These hints will not help you solve the lyrics or the puzzle to determine the final cache location, but hopefully they will help you find the cache at hand if you're having difficulty.
