Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Fairfield County History Geo Trail - Our trail will take you all over Fairfield County to many of our small historic towns that make up this great county. We hope you have fun and experience all our county has to offer.

Charles “Charlie” Goslin was an Author, Editor, and self-taught Naturalist/Historian of Fairfield County, Ohio. He spent nearly all his free time enjoying and learning about nature/history as well as sharing it with others that wanted to learn as well. He observed, logged and researched every inch of Fairfield county, walking every square inch of it. Charles Goslin never learned to drive and relied on others to get him there or walk to where he wanted to go.
Charley was born in 1904 in Pennsylvania but his family soon moved to Lancaster. He earned his living selling men's clothing on Main Street, but he earned his place in the hearts of others by sharing his knowledge as a naturalist and historian. April 14, 1953 the first article of what he thought would be a short series of weekly articles for the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette was published. The “short series” stretched into 32 years of weekly articles. His last “Nature Notes” column was published in 1985.
He retired from his “paying” job in 1968 but continued his avocations until his death in 1990 at age 85. He walked (yes, walked) almost every street and road in Fairfield County, after walking to and from work each day. By 1976 he had 1100 columns to choose from when asked to compile some for his first volume of Crossroads and Fence Corners. It was published by the Fairfield Heritage Association, as was a second volume in 1980.
Mr. Goslin’s memory lives on in Fairfield county inside the Goslin Nature Center located at the Charles F. Alley Park, Lancaster, Ohio. He was truly and remarkable and humble man. .
