Welcome to your Maths Lesson number 3, Number!

This is the third in a collection of four caches, each corresponding to a sector of the current National Curriculum for Mathematics in England. You can find each of the four ‘lesson’ caches separately to each other, you don’t need to find one to find another – feel free to pick and choose. You will, however, need to find all four ‘lessons’ in order to find “The Maths Exam” which is listed as a multi-cache, if you choose to do so.

If you are aiming to complete all four to enable you to find “The Maths Exam” then you must make a note of the number written under the lid of each “Lesson” cache as you’ll need them during your exam. Make sure you remember which number goes with which cache, this is important. Don’t forget!

Getting back to the “Lesson” caches, you’ll need to do some maths to find each cache. The questions will correspond to the curriculum subject for that cache. You may use any resources you need to work out the questions, and there are some suggested links to get you going!

The four lessons are:

1. Algebra
2. Shape
3. Number
4. Data Handling

… And here is a link to the final Exam.

So, onto the lesson!……

NUMBER: PERCENTAGES

In the place where you will go to find the cache, you will see some golf being played, probably!

Golfer John lost 27 out of 45 matches. Golfer Harry won 21 out of 50 matches.

Work out the percentage of their matches that each player has won. Based on this, if John and Harry were to play golf together, who would be most likely to win the match?

Change the first letter of both names into the position the letter is in the alphabet (A=1, B=2 C=3, etc.)

The first letter of the winner’s name is now a number. Call that number ‘W’.

The first letter of the loser’s name is now a number. Call that number ‘L’.

If you need a helping hand, look at this website.

Cache Coordinates =
N53” (L+W).717 (In the format of N00” 00.000)
W003” 0(L-5).4W1 (In the format of W000” 00.000)

If you want to email the co-ords to me first to check (especially if you are travelling far) then feel free to do so BUT you must declare it on your log!

Some notes about the cache itself…

Head for Baskervyle Road in Heswall/Gayton. Head for the co-ords listed at the top of the page to park. Either park at the bottom of Baskervyle Road, or pull into the little cobbled street if you can, as you will start your walk here anyway. If you park in here, please don’t drive any further than the first 100m or so, otherwise you’ll end up going up someone’s driveway. Please park considerately. Head down the cobbled road, turn right (slightly downhill) and keep going. You’ll have no problems finding the path, just follow your GPS from here! If you carry on just round the corner from the cache, you’ll see Heswall Golf Course.

You can cross the course at the proper crossing place and carry on walking to Parkgate if you like! When replacing the cache, please make sure it remains hidden, don’t let it fall ‘through’.. There is some wood and sticks holding it in. Put the twigs and leaves back. You’ll see what I mean! Watch out for Muggles coming ‘round the corner.
