Welcome to your Maths Lesson number 2, Shape!
This is the second in a collection of four caches, each
corresponding to a sector of the current National Curriculum for
Mathematics in England. You can find each of the four ‘lesson’
caches separately to each other, you don’t need to find one to find
another – feel free to pick and choose. You will, however, need to
find all four ‘lessons’ in order to find “The Maths Exam” which is
listed as a multi-cache, if you choose to do so.
If you are aiming to complete all four to enable you to find
“The Maths Exam” then you must make a note of the number written
under the lid of each “Lesson” cache as you’ll need them during
your exam. Make sure you remember which number goes with which
cache, this is important. Don’t forget!
Getting back to the “Lesson” caches, you’ll need to do some
maths to find each cache. The questions will correspond to the
curriculum subject for that cache. You may use any resources you
need to work out the questions, and there are some suggested links
to get you going!

SHAPE: PYTHAGORAS’
THEOREM
In the place where you will go to
find the cache, you will see a very tall lighthouse. Its height can
be used to do distance calculations.
If I stand so I am 52m from the top
of a lighthouse which is 48m high, how far am I from the base of
the lighthouse?
The value that you get from your
answer is ‘L’.
If you need a helping hand, look at
this
website.
Cache Coordinates =
N53” (L+4).7(L+3) (In the format of N00” 00.000)
W003” 0(L-12).(L+4)9 (In the format of W000”
00.000)
If you want to email the co-ords to me first to check
(especially if you are travelling far) then feel free to do so BUT
you must declare it on your log!
Some notes about the cache itself…
You’ll head for Leasowe, Wirral. Park up in the carpark at the
co-ordinates given at the top of the page, and head down either the
bridleway in the direction shown on the GPS, or go up and along the
sea wall itself. The two run parallel to each other. The cache is
just off the path when you come alongside it. It’s a busy area, so
watch out for Muggles. There also may be horseriders in the
adjoining field so be discreet! Please camoflage the cache with
care when you leave.
