This cache series follows the route of one of Iowa’s most ambitious
road building programs – the plank road between Burlington and
Mount Pleasant. Several historical markers commemorate the Plank
Road route. These were placed by various chapters of the Daughters
of the American Revolution. Successful completers of this series
will be able to collect the clues to a special bonus cache in the
area.
Toll Booth #5 - This is the fifth in the plank road series.
Container is waterproof match container near an old stage coach
stop in the former Jimtown area. Congratulations to BJCheryl on
FTF! Regarding this location, Mrs. Cyrena Mathews, mother of former
State Representative Howard Mathews recalled: “My understanding is
that the name of Jimtown came from the name of the man who built
the hotel near here, Mr. Jim Duke. Over the road traveled the
wagons and stage coaches, the latter carrying the traveling public
of the early days. The stage driver would blow a horn when he would
get within a half mile of the place where fresh horses were to be
supplied; it was the work of but a minute or two until the horses
were changed and the coach was on its way again. This stone
contains information on the history of this area in relation to the
Old Plank Road. Pay close attention, as information from this
stone, in addition to the other stops on the Old Plank Road, will
lead you to a
BONUS CACHE in the area.
