Geocache Description:

This cache series follows the route of one of Iowa’s most ambitious road building programs – the plank road between Burlington and Mount Pleasant. Several historical markers commemorate the Plank Road route. These were placed by various chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Successful completers of this series will be able to collect the clues to a special bonus cache in the area.

Toll Booth #2 - This is the second in the plank road series. More stones and more potential clues for the BONUS CACHE in the area. Please be respectful when hunting the cache and gathering information. This cache is placed with permission of the landowner and caretaker. This is one of 46 pioneer cemeteries in Des Moines County. Five of these are located within the confines of the nearby Army Ammunition Plant. This one, located outside the plant boundaries, is unique in several ways. First, you might notice that the headstones are facing a different direction than most cemeteries - north/south rather than east/west. Secondly, although this cemetery is named the Johnson Family Cemetery, there are no Johnson's buried here. The cemetary gets it's name from the family that owned the land when Andrew ________ & Lucy Bell White were buried here over a century ago. Mr. ________ died of Cholera in 1866, eight years after the plank road was written off as a failure. Little Lucy White died on a wagon train while headed to California. She was just 3 months and 22 days old. This information was gathered from the cemetery caretaker, as her stone is not discernable due to wear from weather and the elements. Congratulations to RCujoS and BJCheryl who should probably share in FTF honors.
