The year is 1751; Thomas Cannady is walking along Main Street near Methodist and Congregational Churches in what will later become the city of Manchester. Inquisitive, he descends into a 53-foot well. Suddenly the ground collapses around him. Unable to free himself, Thomas shouts for help. Rope is lowered down and he secures it under his arms around his torso. Efforts to pull him out meet with failure.
An impulsive young man climbs down in the well to cut off the rope. A massive stone and sand are dislodged; crashing down on the two men. Embedded in the debris, the men suffocate in the well’s depths. One can only speculate as to the horror and panic they experienced from being buried alive. Ten days were required to extricate their remains; a fervent reminder of their shocking demise to area residents. Thomas Cannady was the first burial in nearby East Cemetery.
Among the many challenges awaiting you, be not alarmed should you encounter the spirits of their troubled souls reliving their tragic deaths.
