Geocache Description:

This nice ‘n’ easy traditional cache is my contribution to Bubba Riley’s “Return to Tradition” cache series. Simply go to the coordinates listed on the page, and log your find. You will enjoy a pleasant walk along the banks of Horn Pond, in Woburn, MA on your way to the cache. The last 50 feet or so will require a bit of off-the-trail bushwhacking to get to ground zero. But nothing strenuous.

Horn Pond was established as a resort as a result of the development of the Middlesex Canal. The canal provided sightseeing excursions, with one of the region's first amusement parks built along it at Horn Pond. The amusements included a bowling alley located on an island in the middle of the pond! For more information and a sketch of Horn Pond House, click here.

The first and oldest cache in Massachusetts is also located in this park. First Mass was placed here on October 10, 2000. I thought it would be appropriate to return to tradition by returning to the site of this first cache.

Jimmy's Geo Hunt is also located here.

There are picnic tables and fishing is allowed, so you may want to spend the day. And if you forget to bring your lunch, you can always purchase a hot dog or a sausage sub from the hot dog stand that sets up in the parking lot!

The original cache container was a good old-fashioned metal ammo can but it went missing, so it was replaced by a plastic container. It was hidden in a new location nearby the original hide on April 10, 2017. It was filled with brand new swag and a new log book! Since this series focuses on creating and maintaining quality traditional caches, please bring something to trade that you would be really happy to find in a cache. In other words:

Trade Up or Trade Even

I hope you enjoy your leisurely stroll around the pond. And thanks to Bubba Riley for beginning this tradition!
