Trophy Travelbug by TrailRun

I love running trails, and mud's the best,
Please give me a hand in running west.

Basic mission: WEST Please move me west if possible, but if not I'd just like to keep moving. My owner will post his running mileage and see if he can outrun me. My preference is to hit some good trails on the way west, and then to make the jump to Lahaina, Maui.

Although I'm a long way from winning hardware, I love to run, and geocaching has provided me with a lot of new and interesting destinations.

Around the time I turned 40, my brother inspired me to run my first marathon and it has been very rewarding.

I began trail running during marathon training and my favorite events have been on trails, including Dances With Dirt (www.danceswithdirt.com), and the Tecumseh Trail Marathon (www.dinoseries.com).

The starting cache for this TB is near one of my favorite trails. The mud on the trophy was inspired by the "This Sucks" leg of Dances with Dirt. Here's my loooong race report from DWD 2005: (Visit link)

Up until March 12, 2007 I was holding my own against Trophy, but it made a big move and I have some catching up to do. The graph below shows the mileage over time. On November 17, 2007 Trophy reached its goal of reaching Lahaina, Maui and it is now stopped (I hope) with my brother. Maybe sometime I'll catch up. I plan to keep logging miles here as I make progress. (That will be slow in the near future until some knee problems are resolved.)

Don't worry, at this point the mileage is just for entertainment purposes. I would like it to go to Maui, and maybe if it does my brother can keep it on a shelf somewhere and let me catch up. It would probably be good to make it more clear on the goal tag that it should go to Lahaina, Maui. Is the tag still on it?

Well...it's up to you 😁...there's a Stargate by Seattle, WA that can get this to Hawaii...or I can let it run around the West Coast some more...my original plan was to Stargate it to Hawaii...cache on! 🙂

Hmm. Based on the smiley that looks like a taunt before a long plane trip, instead of an observation about the past mileage. A plane trip to Maui is needed to get it to the goal. Is this time for that jump?

Today's run puts me under 4900 miles behind (4882.25).
That's about 45 months of running at my current mileage level.

Ouch, that's about another year of running. The route from Virgina to Anchorage would be quite interesting on foot. Too bad most of my miles will be in the suburbs of Chicago. Trophy is visiting some much more interesting spots.

I'm now 4923.45 miles behind, and not much I can do about it right now. My plan right now is to do just a few long runs before the marathon in October, and to cycle for the rest. After that I think I'll have to take a long time off from running until the knee problems completely subside, and then we'll see.

To make this more of a "race" I may double my running mileage, or possibly only compare against Trophy's progress toward its goal (which is still Maui).

Today was the Dances with Dirt 2007 Relay and that allowed me to reach a couple milestones:

  • The mileage difference is now back under 3000 (2991.75 behind).
  • I finally reached the mileage Trophy had on 3/12/07 when it was placed in Virginia and have made the turn towards Montana. Those next 1957 miles will take some time.

The relay was a lot of fun, but difficult to run. My knees are both having problems and I just can't push it, so I didn't do any extra miles and ran slower than I'd like. Based on this I think I'll do better on the upcoming marathon (10/6) if I only do cross training, rest, and the long runs, so I won't have a lot of miles to count. After that race it's clear I'll have to stop running for a while until my knees are 100%, and who knows how long that will take. But I don't think my running days are over.

It's nice to get a trophy every now and then...grabbed this while on a road trip.
