About This Item

Hanging with Dave Matthews and My Friend Debbie

This is my personal travel bug. In addition to keeping track of my mileage, I'll use it record an ongoing log of our adventures.

This Bug shares my screenname that I use on various DMB forums. It's play on the song title, "One Sweet World" and my first name. The Dave Matthews Band is my favorite band and I've seen them in concert over 50 times. I've traveled across the country to see them play making it as far as Washington state! I thought it fitting name for my personal TB, as I've been quite the travelbug in my past!

[Warning: The TB logs and photos may contain spoilers.]

If you meet me on a geocache hunt, ask me for the TB tracking number and you can log a find.

Retrieve It from a Cache 6/10/2006 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Castle on the Hill New York   Visit Log

First cache attempt for the day, and the only successful one. We were worried that our coordinates from last fall might not be correct anymore (but I was too lazy to get them the new way.) But eventually we did find the cache. Dropped off the yellow jeep, which I am relieved about.

After this cache, we tried Broome Recycles with no luck, followed by Gimme, and Merry-Go-Round Part 5. With Gimme we couldn't even find a place to park where there weren't trespassing signs posted. With Merry-Go-Round I was sure we'd find it, knowing exactly what we'd be looking for and all, but no such luck. We checked both possibilities just to be sure.

I originally planned to attempt Binghamton Like You've Never Seen It.... and The...Return of Cody, but the weather was looking very iffy. Of course it became perfect once we were out a bit and it was too late to start those.

Tomorrow is the IBM picnic up at SUNY. We may bring our gear with us and try to get a few of those caches while we're there.

Retrieve It from a Cache 6/9/2006 Bear Paughs retrieved it from My Cache 3 New York   Visit Log

Took the boys out for a quick cache or two between school and band rehearsal. I didn't know this park was here, not a surprise. We found it very easily. The cache contents were a little lacking, so we left a couple scary balls and a pen. It was nice to be out caching again!

After My Cache 3, we decided to try Seven Seals. We didn't have much time left before we had to get back to the house so Steve could leave for rehearsal. Otherwise we might have found it. We could only look for about 10 minutes before we had to go, and we couldn't find it in those 10 minutes. We'll have to get back to this one SOON.

Retrieve It from a Cache 5/29/2006 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Draupnir (The Cache With Cash) New York   Visit Log

Memorial Day weekend, and the boys and I came to the park to play some football. We decided to bring out the GPS and see if we could find Draupnir once and for all.

This time the GPS took us to where it usually did and we looked in the nooks we'd looked in several times before with no luck. But when we tried to get a new reading it took us in a different direction than it usually did, the opposite way, in fact. When I stooped to take a look at something, Julian got all excited and proclaimed to have found it. I couldn't believe my eyes when he pointed to it -- it was right where I had placed my hand to balance myself! There was only about an inch and a half of space between the container and my hand! And it still took someone else to see it and point it out to me! Geez!

We were very glad to have found it after so long. Once you've looked a few times you begin to worry that it will become impossible to look for the cache with the new perspective necessary to find it. I'm glad this one was found. Although we didn't bring our geogear with us so we couldn't trade the coins we had saved just for this purpose! We'll likely go back to make the trade at some point.

Things are still difficult, but we're going to try and get back to geocaching now that we're settled here at home. I have to find a good cache to drop the jeep we've regrettably had for way too long! I just want to make sure it gets put in a challenging cache (or maybe just a new one that will get a lot of traffic) to make sure it doesn't go missing. Anyway, we've pulled our gear out from storage and I just finished getting GSAK up to date. I've still got to find my Garmin software to install that on my laptop, but all the preparations are almost done for us to get out and going. Now if only the weather will comply! We're excited to get back.

Retrieve It from a Cache 2/6/2006 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Chenango Point Micro New York   Visit Log

This was the first cache done in a long time! How I've missed it! With another day off before returning to work and a spare bit of time while picking up the kids from school, decided to stop by this park and see if we could knock one off our DNF list. Finally, success! I'm looking forward to all of us getting back to caching. Of course, the mild winter we've been having here in town makes a departure as soon as we attempt our first cache after the long hiatus! Hopefully it will warm up again soon!

It's been all too long since we've been able to cache. Family medical needs required I be somewhere else. It's been a rough road. I'm glad to be back with my boys (the big one and the two littler guys!) I hope things can return to normal soon and that we can get back into enjoying geocaching quickly now!

Retrieve It from a Cache 11/13/2005 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Wolfe's Den New York   Visit Log

Liked this walk a lot. Too bad it was getting dark, or we would have attempted the third Wolfe Park cache. Found this one easily, although it was super muddy!

Retrieve It from a Cache 11/13/2005 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Sailor's Cache New York   Visit Log

First of two caches for the day. This one was quite a bit off the posted coordinates, but the clue was dead on and ended up being one of the easiest finds ever. Julian and Ryder spotted it before we had even caught up to them. The cache contents left a little something to be desired. We took nothing, but left behind the cutest thing - an led safety light in the shape of a dogbone. It's to attach to a dog's collar when walking in the dark.

It felt sooooo good to be able to get out and do some caching! October and the first half of November have not been kind to us. It's dark out when I get out of work now, so that leaves mostly weekends only. That is, when we don't have other plans and when the weather is cooperating. Autumn has always been my favorite time of year, but geocaching makes me yearn for summer when it's light out so much longer!

Another great autumn day, and we wanted to make the most of it. We originally thought of doing Professor Cody's, or one or two of the caches at Wolfe Park, but I keep forgetting about how early it gets dark now. After finishing work, running to the post office, and waiting for the kids to finish their homework, we finally got all ready to leave and realized it was going to be far too dark to do any of those we wished.

With everyone disappointed, we had to come up with a backup plan. So Steve and I decided to give Chenango Point Micro a shot. Julian and I had attempted this twice before, one of those times with Ryder, before the cache was replaced. We decided to park on the Conklin Ave side and make a nice walk out of it. It was chilly, but it was a lovely walk for the four of us to take. The whole time Steve was telling ghost stories he made up, and the kids were really into them. It was very cute!

When we got to the other side we headed for the new cache site. It was pretty obvious where it must be. We looked with our trusty flashlight and came up empty. The gates were open now, and I wonder if the cache got removed by workers or muggles since the last logged visit. It would figure that we would miss it again! So it was another DNF for us. But we looked at the river for a little while and then enjoyed our walk back across the bridge. It was a nice night for our little family.

With a beautiful sunny autumn day and a couple hours to spare after work, I took Julian and we tried to do Castle on the Hill. It was a perfect day for it. We looked for a very long time for the first part. We started when it was light out, and didn't finish until after it started getting dark. I actually think the dark is what made it easier to find. With or without flashlight, it was near impossible to see while it was still light out, even though I stared right at it a bunch of times. We probably could have gotten part two, but we decided to go home and save it for another day. With it getting dark out so early now, it's nice to get in these little fixes every chance we get. We loved part one of Castle on the Hill, and are looking forward to doing part two soon.

Retrieve It from a Cache 10/29/2005 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Choconut Key Chain Exchange New York   Visit Log

Boy, it felt really good to do this cache, for a number of reasons. Two of the biggest being 1) that the weather has been really bad for caching for a really long time, and 2) we finally got our first yellow jeep!

Let's start with the weather. Since that Friday when Steve and I raced to do the first parts of Caching with George, it had been almost nonstop rain. Not just rain, either, but heavy, miserable, constant drizzle. Oh -- and there was a day and a half where it snowed, too! Blame that on Hurricane Wilma aftermath. For almost three straight weeks it went on. On the 2 or 3 rare days that it wasn't raining, the ground was far too soft to be conducive to hiking. Talk about going stir crazy! And surprisingly, it was Steve who was going most crazy -- it's as if the minute he got hooked on geocaching the geogods turned against us! He couldn't wait to go again, and yet we weren't able.

So during this run of bad weather I got a couple watchlist notifications that let me know the jeep was in this cache (I had both the cache and the jeep on my watchlist.) They were logged on one of the days that it hadn't rained (but knowing now what the cache is like, I'm very surprised - and even moreso, impressed! - that TeamWarholic was able to do the cache.) I wanted to run right out and get the jeep, but we just weren't able. For about a week I was keeping a close eye, so afraid someone else was going to get it and move it out of the area before we had our chance.

Finally, a non-wet day! Steve and I took the kids to the park and tried to find part one. We didn't realize it, but our coordinates were wrong. There had been a bench removed, which threw us off by about 600-700 feet. So we gave up the search eventually, and just enjoyed a really nice walk together. Later that night I sent an email to EmTeeNesters to verify the coordinates, which is when we discovered they were wrong.

So the next day Steve and I, in our excitement, went to try it again during our lunch hour. We looked for a little while, again with no luck. Sigh Another email from EmTeeNesters, and a hint from another cacher, and I was sure I knew where part one was -- Somewhere that Steve and I had already looked, just not well enough.

It was just me and Julian for this final successful attempt. Steve was busy working on some music for rehearsal, and he suggested that just Juli and I go, because it would mean the most to him. So we went. We found part one really quickly this time, and began part two. Part two was a beautiful hike. We had a great day, and it was really special to have a day like this just to ourselves, since it had been so long since we'd been able to have one.

Finally we made it to the top and found the cache! I was praying that the jeep would still be there. Seriously, I kept thinking someone else would beat us to it, and I didn't want to face that kind of disappointment. It was there! Never has Julian had a bigger smile, and I'm sure mine was from ear-to-ear as well!

On the return hike we saw a deer and a snake, and enjoyed the beautiful fall foliage. It was a great day.

Retrieve It from a Cache 10/8/2005 Bear Paughs retrieved it from Caching With George New York   Visit Log

Caching with George has been possibly my favorite cache so far. The main reason is that this was Steve's first major outing. Yesterday the two of us went and did parts one through four, shortly after it was published. The weather was miserable with all the rain, but we had the best time racing from location to location and figuring out the coordinates. We said it was like our little Amazing Race (it was silly, and probably had something to do with the fact that we had just watched two back to back episodes right before leaving to do this cache.) I love the caches that have to do with local history, and a five part multi-cache made it even that much more fun and interesting.

Steve and I both were amazed at how much he really did enjoy it. He's been waiting to cache with us until the weather turned cooler, but even though we knew we'd get him to come along eventually, neither of us knew that he could get really into it and have so much fun. (I've already told him that I bet it's only a matter of time before he tries to take over my GPSr!)

When we got to the final coordinates we were very disappointed to see that the location was closed. We had missed it by less than an hour! If it had been a week earlier, this place would have been open until 8PM instead of 5PM. We were really anxious to finish this cache, and to see if we could be First to Find. I told Steve not to be surprised if we pulled in at 8 AM only to find a row of cars also trying to be there first.

So this morning we got the boys ready and made our way to the cache. There wasn't a row of cars, but there was one other one. We pulled in seconds after TeamTalan. We had a pleasant conversation with him and looked together for a short time. It was very wet and searching where we were wasn't the easiest in this weather. My arms were soaked! TeamTalan decided to leave, and we decided to give it a few more minutes before we would do the same. We didn't want to spend much more than that in the rain.

Just before we were ready to call it a day, we did find it. This was our third First to Find. We were joking how Steve could brag that out of his first TWO caches, that he has TWO FTFs! Overall, this was so much fun -- despite the weather, even. Steve told me in the car on the way home that he could see how easily this could become addictive. Caching with George was the first cache done with the Bear Paughs united, and we had crazy fun!

After Caching with George we considered doing T.O.W., but we didn't want to have the boys out in that area considering the less than savory element hanging around. So instead we got breakfast and headed home. We can't wait for the next dry day when we can do more caching as a whole family!
