Current Goal

A while back, IGO member Blue Deuce donated a Groundspeak Volunteer Geocoin to the IGO and suggested that it be used as reward for people who put in extra effort for the good of the IGO or geocaching in Iowa.

About This Item

The following are some guidelines that will be used to determine who will be invited to log the coin:

  • People who participate in an IGO sponsored CITO event.
  • The person or people who lead the planning efforts for one of IGOs large annual events. At present, these are Hike N Seek and Cache Bash.
  • People who are very active in organizing, running and improving the IGO. This could include past and present board members and people who donate significant time or resources to the group.
  • People who put in extra effort to get geocaching accepted in a previously off-limits area. This could include folks who give presentations to town councils or park directors.
  • People who actively promote geocaching/IGO by talking to the media, teaching classes and otherwise exposing non-cachers.
  • People who keep geocaching alive and well by placing a higher-than-average number of high-quality caches.

In short, we are looking for people who take the lead in improving geocaching, the image of geocaching, or the relationships geocachers have with others.

Since this is intended to be a reward, only the "best of the best" will be invited. In addition to the high standards, the coin will be awarded no more than 4 times per year. Once a person has been awarded the coin, that person will not be eligible again for a period of one year. We hope that these limits will make logging this coin something special and will challenge people to give more to the geocaching community.

Cachers can be nominated at any time by sending an email to "iowageocacherspresident@gmail.com" with a few words about what the nominee has done to earn the coin. Nominations will be considered by the IGO board of directors and possibly other geocachers. Please put "Extra Effort Geocoin Nomination" in the subject line of the email. An invitation to log the coin will be awarded to the nominee who is chosen as having done the most to further the IGO and/or geocaching.

This is the second time we have been given the privilege to log this geocoin, this time as part of the ‘Hike-n-Seek 2018 Dream Team’ that was formed by cneumann98. It’s our understanding from listening to attendee comments, that all of the events we had planned for and implemented on the H&S weekend, and the nearly 145 new caches we planned, installed, and published were very, very, well received by everyone. We enjoyed working on our part of the effort: working to reserving the venue, donating and picking up door prizes, designing the Noteworthy GeoArt, putting out 47 of the 145 caches (including 2 WIGs), working with businesses to secure sponsors, helping with the meals (setting up, cooking, and cleaning afterwards), and anything else requested by the committee chairperson (AKA affectionally: ‘Boss Lady’😉). We all worked well as a team and are all extremely proud of what we produced for the IGO attendees. Thank you for the opportunity to log this amazing coin.😊

I was able to discover it after Hike-n-Seek 2018. This was a great group to be a part of and I appreciate all their hard work.

I look back at what all had to be done to make the event possible. I felt like I had a small part in it. That's what it takes. Everyone to chip in and do their part. Glad to be part of this long standing event. I think I went to the first one every organized in Cedar Falls.

Glad to be part of it. I hope everyone had a great time.

Discovered this after it was passed along to the best leader the Quad City Area Geocachers could have asked for to run this event - cneumann98. She was gritty. She was tough. She was mean. She was the best. Thanks for leading the charge in running a successful event. Oh, and thanks for letting us discover this super cool trackable!

Looking back at the logs of previous recipients of the IGO "Extra Effort" Geocoin, I am absolutely shocked to be added to this list. I don't think anyone on our HnS2018 committee joined in order to be "rewarded" or applauded in any way but simply to give the Hike-n-Seek event a home for the year as no one else had stepped forward yet. Some likely thought we were crazy for taking on this challenge with less than a year to plan but apparently that kind of craziness ultimately pays off.

To Dave, Joyce, Caleb, Tony, Josh, Michele, Tracy, Joel, Justin, Kendra, Bob, and Robin - I simply can never thank you enough. You are the ones who designed the webpage template; created our logo for the pathtags, shirts, social media, and journals; maintained our online presence; hid the vast majority of the caches; found our event locations; cooked and served the food; built the GPX file; found our event hotels; secured wonderful donors and door prizes; and did whatever I asked you to do when it needed to be done at the events. In exchange, you helped me keep my sanity, keep things in perspective, and keep the weekend rolling through a unified vision. I didn't know all of you before we became our committee but only knew your geocaching presence. I now consider you all friends.

We all know it can be incredibly difficult to get 13 people to agree on how something needs to get done. I appreciate most that we all put our egos aside and allowed the Greater Good stand on its own. I also value that when push comes to shove, we know how to get into a can of beans.

This is Boss Lady, signing off.

Dodgecardoc (Mike) messaged me in back January and asked if I'd be available for a lunch sometime in February. I messaged back that the 24th would work for me but wondered what it was all about. He replied that the IGO Board of Directors wanted to thank me for all my hard work. I thought was "WOW, that is KOOL!!!" I didn't really do it for accolades and applause. I did it because I love Geocaching and I love to see people having fun Geocaching.

I would like to thank each and every member of the Iowa Geocaching Organization Board of Directors for recognizing my accomplishments and efforts. I would also like to thank those who attended this event and help me celebrate.

Before I close there are four people in particular I would especially like to thank.

The first two are L7! (Linda) and C4! (Larry) They were the inspiration for my Mustang series and quite frankly set the bar pretty high. I enjoyed their Herky series so very much.

The third person is Iowa.Landmark (Mark). I really think that he doesn't get the credit that he deserves. All the caches that must come through his email must be overwhelming at times. I swear there were times when he had my caches okayed before I had them submitted.

Lastly is the Director of Buchanan County Conservation Dan Cohen. If you've enjoyed any of my series' they were more than likely under his jurisdiction.

Once again thanks for the honor!!!!!
