One of a series of caches set to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the first written record of Juniper Green in the Colinton Parish records (Nov 18th 1707), and the Water of Leith 2007 cache in Trash out event. Juniper Green has its own web site http://www.junipergreencc.org.uk with lots of information and pictures, from which some of this information is taken.

Technically East Mill would have been out of the Juniper Green boundary, being to the west, but on the east side of Currie. East Mill no longer exists, but stood to the east of the bridge roughly on the site of the present day house. There was also a snuff mill next to it that was operating from 1749 until 1920. It specialised in cinnamon snuff. The first record of East mill is from 1625, which was milling grain until 1900. The cache is placed behind the block that supported the sluice gate. The vertical guide that the gate ran in can still be seen on both sides of the channel.

The inscription on the bridge over the river is “Built by General Thomas Scott of Malleny 1831". When the railway (now the Water of Leith walkway) was built in 1874 the bridge was extended. Further west on the south side of the river, the site of Kinleith Mill can be seen for which the first mention was from 1618. It operated as a paper mill until 1966. Between the cache and Kinleith Mill copper was mined between 1684 and 1758.

The Water of Leith Walkway is very well used, so please take care of muggles. I have rated this for wheelchairs and strollers as they can get to within about 5m of the cache. The LRT and First bus No 44 run along Lanark Road close to the cache.
