In March 2004, Mosman Council made over Lawry Plunkett Reserve at Balmoral Beach and uncovered the route of the former Balmoral tramway. A steep section of sandstone cutting and the remains of the rails forms a part of Sydney’s transport history.
From 1922 to 1958, tram services ran from Balmoral to Athol Wharf, Wynyard, Lane Cove, Chatswood and Northbridge, making it one of the busiest lines in the North Sydney system. On the return journey the trams would make a tortuous descent from Middle Head Road to Balmoral Beach through an impressive system of cuttings, culverts and curves.
In the days before widespread use of cars, the trams allowed thousands of visitors access to Balmoral Beach. Though the trams are remembered with fondness today in the 1920s they were met with cries of local dismay like those which greet the arrival of the summer ferry service and the usual weekend crush of cars visiting local restaurants and the esplanade.
The reserve is also the site of an Aboriginal midden.
