Richmond Rally IV Event Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dot Plotter: Thanks to all who attended. Time for this one to go since it is well over 30 days since the event was held. Please retrieve any remaining geocoins/travel bugs still hanging out at the event.

Thanks,

Geocache Description:

In 2004 we brought you the original Richmond River Rally

In 2005 we ventured to Dorey Park for Richmond Rally II

Last year at Pocahontas we broke attendance records for Richmond Rally III

In 2007, you wanted it, you asked for it. AND NOW? You’ve got it!
The CVGA is back for another Richmond Rally.

Saturday, June 9, 2007
Pocahontas State Park, Shelter #5
10:00am until whenever
Parking fee of $4 for day visitors on Saturday

Once again, the CVGA crew is headed south of the river to celebrate geocaching within the beautiful confines of Pocahontas State Park.

We've reserved Shelters #5 and #6 for Saturday, June 9, 2007 to hold the fourth annual Richmond Rally geocaching event. It's another chance to put a face to all those names you see in the logs or on the forums and meet some new folks as well! We've got the shelter until sunset and plan to kick things off at around 10:00am.

Check back for a more detailed schedule to come out in the coming weeks but you can count on a big group lunch, travel bug and geocoin trading, a few geocaching classes throughout the day, kids crafts, some doorprizes, a cache container contest and a performance by the Waypoints (much to their surprise)!

PARKING INFORMATION

The parking fee is $4 per car for day visitors on Saturday. Parking is included (for 2 vehicles) with camping fees. Parking fees are required anytime you park a car at Pocahontas State Park - whether you go into the main park area or not. There are a couple of drop boxes in the larger parking areas or you can pick up a parking pass at the main entrance.

The State of Virginia has various annual and lifetime passes that frequent visitors may be interested in. Also, Friends of Pocahontas State Park volunteers can earn a yearly parking pass with volunteer hours.

CAMPING INFORMATION

We have a number of camping spaces reserved for Geocachers attending the event. When making reservations please call the central reservations number at 1-800-933-PARK and make reservations as normal. The central office relies on the park to assign specific spots and Pocahontas is holding a loop open for us in which they will place reservations marked as being associated with the event. After you have registered, please send Code_Zero a note indicating the REAL name you made the reservation under, how many in your party, and how many camping spaces you reserved, and for which days.  Friday morning, June 8th, we will mark off the required number of campsites in the loop provided by the Park. Reservations should be made No later than June 5th, any made afterwards cannot be guaranteed a spot in the loop area.

WAYPOINT LOADING

Inertial and stepol will be there with their laptops to load waypoints centered around the event into your GPS receivers! This will save you a lot of time since there are going to be several new caches activated just in time for this event, and this way you won't have to input all the coordinates yourself. Inertial will be loading them for Garmin users and stepol will be loading them for Magellan users.

If you use another brand of GPS receiver, you can bring your interface cable and a device driver disc and we'll do our best to help you. If you'd prefer, you can contact them before Friday and let them know what model you have and they can try to download the drivers beforehand.

We'll be loading the closest 200 caches (10 mile radius around the Rally), give or take a few, so make sure there's room for these in your GPS or plan on deleting your waypoints before we load your unit.

SWIMMING INFORMATION

Pocahontas State Park's Pool and Aquatic Recreation Center is open from 10:00am to 7:00pm on both Saturday and Sunday. Cachers who are camping enjoy one day of free swimming for each night of overnight camping. The park has generously offered all other cachers to use the pool for the group rate of $4 per person. A great way to cool off after a hard day in the woods.

MUSEUM INFORMATION

Both the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum and the Nature Center will be open on Saturday during the event. Feel free to drop by and learn a little bit more about the young men who lived here while they developed the Swift Creek Recreation Area in the 1930s and the creatures who live here today!

POCAHONTAS PREMIERES

After wandering around in the woods, what better way is there to unwind then to bring the whole family to chill on the hill at the Heritage Amphitheater while listening to feisty, saucy and soulful blues music. SAFFIRE - The Uppity Blues Women as well as Johnnie and the Lowdowns will be pounding out great roadhouse rhythms for you to enjoy. The concert runs from 6pm to 9pm and tickets are $10 per person the day of the show or $7 in advance, which includes parking. So if you were going to pay $4 for parking anyway, pay $3 more and get a ticket to the show! Kids 12 and under are free. Food and beverages will be available. Call 1-800-933-PARK to get tickets now.

TRAVEL BUG RACE

The Central Virginia Geocaching Association is going to have a Travel Bug Race!  You've all run across TBs whose printouts say they are in one kind of race or another, so it's high time we hold our own.

How do you participate? That's easy! Simply bring a newly-activated (NO MILES YET) Travel Bug to the Rally and drop it on one of the TB tables. There will also be a race sign-up sheet at the Rally to help us track all the bugs in the race.

We'll update
our CVGA Wiki on Wetpaint page to show the stats, hopefully on a weekly basis.

Now, the rules:

   1. Anyone may participate
   2. You may enter multiple Travel Bugs into the race
   3. Attending the Rally is NOT required to join the race and you may start at any time after June 9, 2007
   4. If you are not attending the Rally and want to participate, drop your brand-new TB into any cache AFTER the race begins. Send Inertial a message to let him know you've joined in the fun
   5. You may NOT move your own Travel Bug; drop it and that's all the involvement you should have
   6. Optional: Join the CVGA so you can talk some smack!
   7. The race ends when the New Year's Eve ball drops in New York (that's midnight on December 30, 2007) and the winner is the TB that travels the farthest by that time.
   8. Prizes will be provided to the 3 TBs with the most mileage.

Good luck and happy trails!

CREATIVE CACHE CONTAINER CONTEST

There will be 3 categories:  large—the size of ammo cans & bigger, small—size of nanos, bison tubes, etc., and medium—everything in between.  No need to pre-enter.  No limit on number of entries.  Exact size limits to be determined the day of the picnic, trying to keep the categories approximately even in number of entries.

Contest begins 15 minutes after the picnic commences.  Late entries accepted, but you might miss some voters.  All attendees will get to vote once in each category and also for best of show.

There will be prizes. If you wish to donate your container as a door prize or as part of the silent auction, it will be so marked.

Caches may be an item totally constructed by the entrant, a container that is camouflaged by the entrant, or a purchased or found item that has been somehow transformed into a cache. Categories are small, medium, and large for new containers and one class of retired containers.

As an added incentive—anyone who enters AND can decode the message below gets a special prize.   Just bring the decoded message along with your entry and be rewarded immediately.
