I have found a information board in the village today, so made a note of what it said
Wells were important places : access to pure water was essential for every household. Many wells had ceremonies at particular times of the year to encourage the powers that be to maintain the purity and flow of the water.
Local people believed that the water of Ffynnongroyd had healing powers for sprains, sore eyes and minor ailments. The well also became a social centre where the women would meet and chat as they came to fill buckets with water and maybe do their washing in the overflow from the well.
Clooiers filled their canteens at the well on their way to the pits and reputedly bathed their feet in the soothing outflow as they returned home.
Ffynnongroyw village did not have a piped supply untill the 1930s even then few houses actually had their own piped supply, several households would share a standpipe. Usage of the well continued untill it was officially closed in the latter half of the 1980s.
Conservation work was carried out by Flintshire Services in 1997.

Ffynnongroyw means "clear well" a local legend states that a group of sailors shipwreaked in the River Dee came ashore here found the well and named it Ffynnongroyd.

Ffynnogoyw, spelt Ffynnongroew by the County Council and pronounced Ffynnon-groo by Deesider's is 'the clear-fresh well (now capped).
