A "John Masser Memorial" Geocache . . .
Created by the late Banksia777, this classic -- but fairly easy -- two-part multi will eventually take you to the spectacular views at Moya Point, behind the famous Fairmont Resort and the popular Leura Golf Course.
You'll be on your way to lookouts that are hidden away in the Leura area along 'Inspiration Point' . . .
GZ is located near the National Park beyond the Fairmont Resort property.
It’s suggested to park your vehicle in Sublime Point Road somewhere near S33 43.368 E150 20.792 because -- although the locals like pjmpjm do it all the time -- there is officially no parking permitted within the very large Fairmont Resort car park, even in the completely empty areas far, far away from the main entrance, down next to the golf course . . .
So, from Sublime Point Road walk to the ‘Fairmont Resort’ sign and then down the hill following the driveway as it goes round to the left. You'll find that it skirts the front of the Resort buildings. A bit further on the road splits. Take the right one which leads you down and around past a 'jungle gym' type of obstacle course, and you'll eventually end up near the 14th tee of the Leura Golf Course.
(Alternatively, just use your GPSr and common-sense to get to the trailhead coordinates without going anywhere near the Resort buildings, staying completely off the golf course.)
The trailhead is at S33 43.331 E150 21.175 and the track is well defined, running alongside the golf fairways until you each WP1. There is quite heavy tree cover around WP1 so your readings may be a little flaky. Use the clues to help you find it. WP1 isn't very far at all from the fairway, so some stealth may be needed to retrieve the little container.
Now it’s an moderately easy stroll along good tracks to reach the actual area where the geocache is hidden. When you get near GZ there are lots of great spots for viewing, and a rough track takes you out to others. Be careful as you get out on the point, because the ground falls away steeply on both sides of the track.
Remember that there’s no need to leave the track at any time to retrieve the cache. Stay on the tracks to protect the environment. And don’t forget your camera!
Banksia777 slightly raises his voice in his original description and cautions: "PLEASE NOTE THAT THERE ARE CLIFFS THE CACHE AREA. TAKE CARE!" If you bring geo-kids here, take great care, especially if you're new to geocaching in the Blue Mountains area. I've decided to raise the terrain rating to 4 because of the minor scrambling you'll have to do around the GZ, with cliffs on both sides of the beautiful lookout.
Thanks very much to our late friend Banksia777 for setting up this wonderful multi.
