"National Make A Difference Day"

October 27 is "National Make A Difference Day" and to help prepare for the MN 150th Anniversary of Statehood, the geocache community is invited to identify several locations within the Fort Snelling National Historic District and surrounding area. Beginning at Crosby Regional Park and then crossing the river over to the Fort Snelling Historic District, geocachers will be given photographs from the 1800s and 1900s with the challenge to find the location of where the photo was taken. These coordinates will be used in coming weeks to create photo caches locations which will be shared with youth mentoring agencies and scout groups. In the cache will be information about key people or events in history that took place at that spot. Students may earn a patch related to the MN150 celebration and Historic Fort Snelling by completing this "photo treasure hunt" during 2008 in addition to other history-related activities. The patch activities are designed to help the community "find the treasure" of Fort Snelling as part of our rich Minnesota culture and heritage; it will also bring awareness to the need to save the buildings and landscapes, and get families outside and exercising.
