Controversy Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

LavaLizard: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

Easy two-stage multi begins outside the Buena Vista Audubon Society Nature Center. Although the parking lot closes at 4pm, the park trails around the lagoon and the picnic tables are open to the public during most daylight hours. Final is camo'ed lock and lock.

The Buena Vista lagoon began life as a coastal estuary flowing in and out of the ocean with the tidal surge and replenished by runoff from Buena Vista Creek. It is now the only freshwater lagoon in SoCal.

Portions of the lagoon have been used for development as early as 1883, when the Southern Pacific Railroad built train tracks across it. Treated effluent was discharged into the lagoon from 1956 to 1965, and 160 acres of marshland have been filled in as a result of the rapid urbanization that began in the 1970’s – most notably the development of the shopping mall to the east. It is now divided into four basins. Currently a weir, installed in the ocean outlet in 1948, isolates the lagoon from tidal influence and regulates maximum water levels.

The future of this lagoon is currently a subject of much controversy. Left as is, the lagoon will eventually turn into a meadow as the water level decreases, sedimentation continues and the tules fill in. Three options are being discussed: Do nothing and allow it to become a meadow; open it up to the ocean and turn it back into a saltwater lagoon; dredge it, replenish the water and maintain it as a freshwater lagoon. Each path has its merits and its drawbacks.

Come walk around the lagoon and look at the more than 200 species of birds living and nesting here along with various assortments of amphibians and mammals. What future do you see??
