It took the Bamberger a full three years to build track two
miles north from Bountiful to Centerville. Centerville was barely a
village in 1895, when the Bamberger came through. Instead of
following major roads, as it had through North Salt Lake and
Bountiful, the Bamberger cut across field after field as it headed
north towards Farmington. In some fields, you can still see the
railbed, a straight line about three feet higher than the
surrounding terrain.
Centerville City has created a concrete/asphalt trail that
follows the Bamberger Railroad's path from the former depot on
Porter Lane (marked by a nice plaque) all the way north to Parrish
Lane. The middle section is particularly well done. The road
crossing is marked by concrete ties painted to look like tracks,
and the city has placed plaques every 100 feet or so with
information about Simon Bamberger and the Bamberger line. The city
even required Walmart to finish the portion of the trail crossing
through their property as part of their contact. Be sure to check
out the Walmart portion of the trail. It is a nicely landscaped
concrete path that meanders along the entire east side of their
property (and is already very popular with skateboarders!)
