Geocache Description:

We wanted to hide the cache by the Major John H. Gardner memorial but the cache is too big. So we put it in a small foresty looking thing. Gardner Field Airfield was active in 1941. It consisted of 985 acres and was named in honor of Major John Gardner. Chuck Yeager was one of the many cadets that attended training at Gardner Airfield(1942). 5 years later he became the first person to go faster than sound. Due to 38 training flight deaths, the airfield was eventually closed in 1949-52. In 1952 it was no longer an airfield of any kind. They finally demolished the runway in 1970. Now the airfield has been taken over for farming. A memorial of the Airfield and of Major John H. Garder was placed at the intersection of Cadet and Basic School Roads. Taft Museum is supposed to have wartime photos of the base.
