While I was preparing for the
2008 Appleton CITO event that I am hosting this year at Jones
Park (which is not too far from this cache) I began to think about
all this trash so I started researching information on garbage. I
found literally tons of amazing facts and
figures.
Some statistics I found...
Paper
- The average American creates more than B *
B pounds of solid waste each week.
- Americans throw away (J * 20 + 10) Million
trees every year as Newsprint. (local source)
- Making one ton of recycled paper uses only about
E0% of the energy needed to make a ton of virgin
paper.
Plastic
- It takes over 1.5 million barrels of oil to
manufacture a (I - 1) year’s supply of bottled water. That’s
enough oil to fuel 100,000 cars.
- Eight out of every (F + 8) plastic water
bottles become landfill waste.
- Every year A million Birds and A
hundred thousand Marine animals die because garbage is dumped into
the oceans.
Aluminum
- Recycling 2(G + 3) Aluminum Cans saves the
equivalent of 1 gallon of gasoline in energy.
- The 36 billion aluminum cans landfilled last year
had a scrap value of more than $(D - 1)00 million.
Glass
- We save over 2000 pounds of resources for every
(C - 1),000 pounds of glass recycled.
- Americans throw away enough glass bottles and
jars every I weeks to fill the 1,350-foot towers of the
former World Trade Center.
- We reduce air pollution by (H * 2)% – 20%
by recycling glass.
