Geocache Description:

A small cache located near the caboose next to the Goleta Depot.

This is a replacement for the archived cache "the Goleta Short Line" GCJJEW
The cache is hidden near, but NOT ON the historic caboose.
There is no need to climb on (or crawl under) the caboose to find it!
It is camouflaged to avoid drawing attention to itself. Please replace carefully to keep it safe.

The South Coast Rail Museum is located on Lake Los Carneros County Park Property, and the grounds are open 24 hrs. There are picnic tables nearby and this is a nice quiet place to eat your lunch on weekdays. Please be watchful when when museum is open (Wed-Sun, 1-4pm) as there are museum volunteers eager to show you the sights! However, if you do visit during museum hours, you will be able to explore the inside of the caboose and depot, plus take rides on the miniature train line. There is also a cute little gift shop. No admission charge - but there is a donation box available.

Caboose No. 4023 was built in 1961 by the Pacific Car and Foundry Company. Originally, it was assigned a number in the 1400-1599 range. Starting in 1973, Southern Pacific remodeled 124 of these C-40-4 cabooses. The makeover involved a number of upgrades and improvements. These included a taller center bay, double “frog-eye” roof mounted marker lights, an external fuel tank, roller bearing trucks, an axle-hung generator, improved radio equipment, roof walks and end ladders, a chemical-retentive toilet (replacing the old sewer chute) and additional windows. The modernized caboose was assigned No. 4023, and also featured a new mineral-red exterior with safety-orange bays and end walls.
