Geocache Description:

Located near the original French Creek Camping area

Warning!! This is not a "shorts and sandals" cache. When I first moved to the area these were the French Creek Campgrounds. Hordes of mosquitoes from Pine Swamp would come every evening for dinner and spring rains would make access difficult. Now very little remains except the overgrown fields, a couple old foundations, and traces of the old access roads. While you are wandering about, note that French Creek State Park was originally formed by the Feds as a demonstration area for states to learn how to design park systems. Depending on your route to this spot, you may have crossed through one of the two old demonstration campgrounds. The higher one was used as a campsite on the Horseshoe trail until the 1990s, but mercifully the state closed the lower one in the swamp around 1980 when the Brush Hill Campground was opened. Especially during the spring, don't wander off into the nearby marsh. It is the prime breeding time for the local amphibians. DCNR approved this cache Part of the reason I'm pointing this area out is to show how much we have learned about park design since the early days. Imagine getting there after dark in the rain and trying to select a good tenting site. My first night in a state park was spent in a skunk cabbage bog along the Kettle Creek in June of 1954. I'll never forget it, but we still went back to the same park (different site) all through my childhood, and then again from when my kids were around 10 until they were grown. No matter how you do this one it isn't a cache & dash. A map will suggest three potential routes. One is almost always muddy, one is multiflora rose thus almost always bloody. The third is a nice little walk in the woods, however you will miss the close up and personal look at the old camping areas. If you are sitting in your car in a large parking lot be prepared for a terrain 4 hike. If you explore the surrounding roads a bit more you may find a .17 mile walk in open woods.
