Geocache Description:

Sleepy Creek Wildlife Area. Just a short walk from parking area in a beautiful hillside setting. Very near a natural spring.

Wild Turkey are everywhere in Sleepy Creek Wildlife area. The cache owners live at the bottom of this mountain and it is not unusual for us to see flocks of up to 20 turkeys wondering thru our yard, especially in the spring and fall.

Adult male Wild Turkeys have a small, featherless, reddish head that can change to blue in minutes a red throat in males; long reddish-orange to grayish-blue legs; and a dark-brown to black body. Males have red wattles on the throat and neck. Each foot has four toes, and males have rear spurs on their lower legs. There are very colorful birds.

Wild Turkeys are omnivorous, foraging on the ground or climbing shrubs and small trees to feed. They prefer eating hard mast such as acorns, nuts, and various trees, including hazel, chestnut, hickory, and pinyon pine as well as various seeds, berries such as juniper and bearberry, roots and insects. Watch for signs of turkey as you walk around the area. You can spot where the turkeys have moved back the leaves in a big circle looking for nuts. Turkeys are also known to eat a wide variety of grasses. Moreover, around 80% of a turkey's diet is made up of grass.

Early morning and late afternoon are the best time to spot them.
Turkeys have 20,000 to 30,000 feathers. Maybe you can spot one in the woods.

Males typically have a "beard" consisting of modified feathers that stick out from the breast. Beards average 9 inches (230 mm) in length. The adult male normally weighs between 11 and 24 lbs.

I would not suggest attempting this cache during hunting season.
There are three additional caches on this road, Canadian Geese, “Rescue the Cat” and Goin' Fishing.

To get to this cache turn left after you pass the Campground sign-in board. The road to the left takes you towards the Upper Campground. Just across the road from the Boat launch and Myers Place Campground is a gravel parking lot. I suggest you park there and follow the sign to the "Myers Spring". Once at the spring follow your GPS a short distance to the turkey, I mean the cache. Please replace cache just as you found it.
