At Waypoint 1 you will have to solve the latitude co-ordinates for the cache, based on clues found at this location. At Waypoint 2, you must solve the longitude co-ordinates for the cache in the same manner.

On the way, you will find breathtaking architecture and historic monuments, alongside the fountains and jacarandas of the Library Lawns. A detailed map of the campus can be found here. (You may also wish to visit GC1RXX2 and GC1QVD4 which are also on the Wits campus).

The original Padrão de São Gregorio, planted at Kwaaihoek by Bartholomew Dias on the 12th March, 1488 is housed in the William Cullen Library of the University of the Witwatersrand.

The cross at Kwaaihoek was planted by Dias on his epic voyage with a squadron of three ships, two caravels and a square rigged store ship, to seek out a passage to the Indies. The position of the Padrão de São Gregorio was unknown until Professor Eric Axelson of the University of the Witwatersrand, through diligent detective work, found the remains of the cross on an expedition financed by the University in December, 1937.

If you would like to view the Dias Cross, the William Cullen Library is open to the public on Weekdays from 08:00 - 17:00, Wednesdays from 09:00 - 17:00, and Saturdays from 08:30 - 12:30 during the varsity term.

Final Cache

The final cache consists of a magnetic container with a logbook, pencil, and space for small trade items. Please take care to replace the cache out of sight!
