Geocache Description:

A great view from Gubur Dhaura (Hill 56 on the survey pegs).

This is our second geocache to place. We have been wondering where to put one and when the new road opened this week some exploring was in store. Gungahlin has changed so much in the last few years. I wonder how much and how quickly it will change around here? We hope you enjoy the cache and the view.

Due to a couple of log comments we have tried to find out more about this site and now found it is on an Interim Heritage Place Register as Red Hill Ochre Quarry, Block 5 & 10 District of Gungahlin although the ACTMapi site (visit link) lists the cache site as Gubur Dhaura on Block 1 Section 106 Franklin, designated as public land.

A web-search found the following information gazetted:

Gubur Dhaura - Gubur is a Ngunnawal word meaning 'red ochre' and Dhaura is both a Ngunnawal and Ngarigu word meaning 'ground'. This place has an abundant source of naturally occurring red and yellow ochres, which are considered an important source for Aboriginal communities, past and present.

An abundant array of camping and grinding stones has been recovered from the site.

As heritage signs are around the site (although weren't there when the cache was placed nor were the fences) asking to keep out, please do. The new coordinates & container are outside the heritage site.

Regrettably we have had to revert to yet another micro, Bring a pencil.
