The land on both sides of the road here is mostly owned by the
University of California, Davis. Various departments have field
facilities here; on this side of the road the land is used for
agricultural and environmental research on plants. There is even
more land than what you see here; that is located on the west side
of Highway 113 and at various other locations around the region.
There are some big trees here at the roadside and these date
back to before UCDavis was a university campus. In those days, it
was a field station for UC Berkeley. Today, UCDavis is one of the
leaders in agricultural research in the world, largely because it
has access to considerable lands on which to carry out world-class
research. And much of this research has resulted in advances in the
food you eat. Take a look at the rankings of the best universities
in the US and see if you can find any others on the list where
Agriculture is big. Go Aggies!
Parking at the cache site is probably not a good idea; a bit
further south is a driveway with plenty of room to temporarily park
the cachemobile.
