This cache will take on a short Multi in Brooklyn Cemetery were you will learn about Robert Buie.
Robert Buie was a local Oyster farmer. He used to practice his shooting skills bringing down sea eagles that used to try to steal fish from his net. In the First World War, he signed up for the army and was stationed on the Somme river with the AIF's 53rd Australian Field Battery, 5th Division.
On a clear morning of the 21st of April, 1918, an novice Canadian pilot Wilfrid May on his first ever patrol was getting attacked by a German triplane. The triplane was moving in for the kill when it too got attacked from above by Canadian Captain Roy Brown. The German triplane took immediate evasive action and headed up the hill straight for Robert Buie. At 50 feet off the ground and only a few hundred feet away it presented a perfect target for Robert and his Lewis gun.
What happend next? Did Robert miss? What was the significance of all this to the war? Visit Robert's grave to find out.
In August 1918, Robert was hospitalised with a heart condition related to being gased and was subsequently medically discharged from the army. Buie returned to his hometown of Brooklyn. He repeatedly applied for a War Service Pension, but was refused each time. He died broke on Anzac Day, 1964, while fishing on the Hawkesbury to feed his family..
