Geocache Description:

The trailhead doesn't look like a trailhead unless you are standing at it. You need to step over the guardrail on the corner and then you'll see the trail. Be careful of cars while you're doing that. You'll think you are in someone's backyard but go across the wooden bridge and stay to the left and you'll be on conservation land. Small waterproof container that holds log and a few other things. Should be very easy find. Please no night caching.

This cache is part of the Ghost Train series of caches along the route of the old Milford to Manchester Railroad. We've long been intrigued by the Milford and Manchester Railroad that was only in use for a few short years. A list of this series can be found at the bookmark:
Ghost Train Series

This cache is placed on the old railroad bed near the source of Beaver Brook in Amherst. I called it Ancient Beaver because of the very old evidence of beaver activity nearby. I don't know how old the beavers were at the time of the knawing. :)

I was thrilled to find this section as it is a beautiful walk in. This cache is in a similar environment as Ghost Train Bedford McQuade so if you liked that one I'm guessing you'll like this one as well.

Parking is a problem. You might be able to find room for one or two cars on the side of the road a couple hundred feet east of the trailhead on the south side of the road.

The trailhead doesn't look like a trailhead unless you are standing at it. You need to step over the "guardrail" thingy and then you'll see the trail. Be careful of cars while you're doing that. You'll think you are in someone's backyard but go across the wooden bridge and stay to the left and you'll be on conservation land.

The railroad bed is conservation land but once you go over the wooden bridge at the start of the trail you'll feel like you are in someone's backyard. You are on conservation land but please be considerate. Please don't do this cache at night because of the homes nearby.

While the section of the trail from the trailhead to the cache is conservation land, at some point further to the north the railroad bed is not conservation land but is private land. You'd have to look at a map (which I did :) ) to see where the private land begins but in any case the cache and the walk are on Amherst conservation land.

A bit more information on the railroad (owned by the Boston and
Maine Railroad) can be found here:
