A couple months ago my kids and I came across something in Antioch
that made me think I ought to do a cache called "Batmobile". I
didn't do it right away, though, so over the following weeks an
idea formed for this Batman-themed cache series. Initially I was
going to place all the caches in appropriate places around Antioch,
but in the end I decided to showcase as much of East Contra Costa
County as possible, limited only by my imagination and area
saturation. Each placement makes sense to me, and if you examine
the surrounding businesses, geography, etc. it may make sense to
you. No, they're not all the best looking or most prestigious areas
of our county, but it's important to me to remember they're parts
of the whole.
Your ultimate goal in this series is to find
the Batcave, which is at the following mystery coordinates:
N37,5A.BCD W121,5W.XYZ. Each of the other eight caches in the
series -- all of which can be viewed
here -- contains the numeric equivalent of each letter in the
coordinates. Replace the letters with the appropriate numbers, and
you've found the location of Batman's secret headquarters. GOOD
LUCK!
WAYNE ENTERPRISES/WAYNE FOUNDATION
Wayne Enterprises (formerly WayneCorp) is a fictional company in
the DC Universe. Wayne Enterprises is owned by billionaire Bruce
Wayne and run by his business manager Lucius Fox. It was founded by
merchant ancestors of the Wayne family in the 17th century. Based
in Gotham City, WayneCorp eventually became a large multinational
conglomerate. The company opened new subsidiaries, such as Wayne
Shipping, Wayne Chemicals and Wayne Aerospace, while shutting down
others, such as Wayne Manufacturing. In addition to providing an
income for Bruce Wayne, the various activities of the corporation
help facilitate his Batman activities.
The Wayne Foundation is the holding company for the Thomas Wayne
Foundation (foundation for medicine and medical help) and the
Martha Wayne Foundation (patron and supporter of arts, families,
education and social tolerance). Through the Wayne Foundation and
the organizations underneath, Bruce Wayne not only addresses social
problems that facilitate crime and assisting victims in a way that
his Batman persona cannot, but the arrangement also provides a
large network of connections in the world of charities. He finds
out about the newest trends and newest arts, but at the same time
maintains connections to the streets through the soup kitchens and
social services groups, which augments his crime fighting
efforts.
BRENTWOOD
Brentwood began as a farming community in the late 1800s, and is
known throughout the Bay Area for its agricultural products,
primarily its cherries, corn and peaches. Many of the old farms and
orchards have been replaced by suburban developments since 1990.
Brentwood is increasingly residential, with the rate of residential
growth in the triple digits during the 1990s and 69% from
2000-2005. The historic water tower on Walnut Street symbolizes
this transition in the city's character. It no longer serves its
original purpose, but now hosts a large number of cell phone
transmitters.
Brentwood was originally laid out on land donated from property
owned by John Marsh, an East Contra Costa County pioneer who
acquired Rancho Los Meganos, the land grant that Brentwood is built
upon, in 1837 from Jose Noriega. Brentwood was named after Marsh's
ancestral home, the town of Brentwood in the County of Essex,
England. Brentwood's first post office was established in 1878. The
city incorporated in 1948.
