HISTORY OF CARDS

There is some controversy on the origins of playing cards. Since paper was invented in China, most historians agree that they were first made there as early as the 9th Century when the suits consisted of coins and strings of coins (circles and bamboos). Some sources say that cards were first played in the Muslim world, and others suggest that the Arabs introduced playing cards into Europe.

Cards established themselves in Europe the 1300s. The look of cards started to change, major suit systems started to evolve, and there was a distinct difference between the symbols on them. Each of the symbols reflected something about their cultures. It seems likely that the modern cards which we use today that are called Spanish, originated in France.

When cards arrived in the United States around the 1800s, their look was also changed. The Americans invented things such as the Joker, and indexes (the small numbers and letters at the top-left and bottom-right of playing cards), to make it easier to sort through the decks of cards.
