Geocache Description:

There's a swamp where Page's Creek flows into Lane Cove River. Once upon a time there was a track that traversed Pages Creek Swamp, and finding this cache involved following that track. However, nature has reclaimed it, so there's now a cache in the middle of this bush, remote from a track!

I have found seven places (Ref Pts 01-07) where you can enter the bush (although #3 is normally padlocked). In principle the adventurous should be able to reach the cache from any of these start points. In recent times I have only reached it from one of them.

Before you set off though you need to find the coordinates, which are hidden at the posted location, where the Great North Walk crosses Epping Road, near Ref Pt #1, the original starting point. The ccords are given as decimal minutes (no degrees as they should be obvious).

Depending where you start, you may need to cross the swamp itself, which I wouldn't suggest attempting after heavy rain - it is, after all, a swamp. Probably best to avoid very high tides too. Also, beware of snakes, I have encountered them here.

[History of this cache:

Jan 2010 Hid first version as GC1XKVJ - the first cache I placed. The feedback I received encouraged me to redo it with a real, rather than nano, cache and with more conventional clues:

Oct 2010 Reworked as this cache, with following original instructions:

There is a path that traverses Pages Creek Swamp. It is not signposted. It is however clearly shown on the 2000 STEP Map of "Walking Tracks of the Lane Cove Valley". (STEP categorises it as "Track in poor condition" and has a long disclaimer for this category.) It is steep in places, and if no-one has been through it recently, it can be very overgrown. The following instructions take you across the swamp and then return you to your start point by a much easier route (of course, once you have the cache, you can turn round and retrace your steps, but the circular route offers good views and whilst being a longer distance it probably takes no longer time). You will find the cache along this route.

The entrance is on the Epping Road, un-sign-posted and hard to spot unless you know it is there. It is at the given location behind two large wooden (power / telegraph ?) poles. Honest - it's there - just poke your head through the bushes and a very rudimentary path can be seen! There is pretty much only one way to go and there are some obstacles including a drainage gully, two steep slopes and, of course, a swamp.

Before you set off though you need to find the coordinates, which are hidden (Waypoint CO - coordinates) fairly close to the start point. They are given as decimal minutes (no degrees as they should be obvious).

From the start point you head a bit north of west, slowly bending round until almost west. When you reach the swampy valley floor take the shortest route across it, a bit south of south west. There are many ways across but there's only one obvious way up and it looks pretty steep. You can follow this path straight to the end at Magdala Rd opposite the RSL. Turn left and continue until you get to Magdala Park. Turn left onto The Great North Walk and return to your start point in a nice loop across a footbridge.

Apr 2013 Was the last time I successfully followed the track. It was very overgrown to the extent that I lost it several times, so I re-rated the terrain.

May 2020 It was being found occasionally, but when I checked, whilst the start and end of the track were still visible, a significant section in the middle had been reclaimed by nature. It's not just bush-bashing, it needs a machete. So time to redo it.]
