GOOD LUCK

You are on a quest to find the Blowing Stone, or the Blowing Stone cache to be precise. In order to complete the quest you are required to take a journey through the Vale of the White horse. During your journey you will learn about King Alfred, The Great King of the southern Anglo-Saxon kingdom of Wessex and the greatest King in English history. You can decide how much of what you hear is fact or folklore!

PLEASE POST PHOTOS AND VIDEOS OF YOU BLOWING THE STONE

Along the way you must find some ancient Saxon artifacts relating to stories that you will hear along the way, these contain the answers that will ultimately lead you to complete the quest, the Blowing Stone cache, which is a short drive away but it could be walked if you prefer..

DO NOT REMOVE THE ARTIFACTS.

The caches can be done in any order, but the clues assume you are doing them numerically. There are two well stocked SWAG caches one is the bonus the other can be found along the Kingston Lisle Loop end in case you are caching with young kiddies who can't make it all the way round.

Some of the caches may be trickier than the norm and hence the rating on those particular ones

You may like to bring 60p to purchase a souvenir from the keeper of the stone at the end of your quest

Following battle defeat in 870 the Danes, flush with confidence, marched out to attack the Saxons who had retreated up onto the Berkshire Downs. Though only twenty-two, Prince Alfred was a seasoned warrior and knew that he must act quickly to avoid disaster. He had to amass the King’s troops from the surrounding countryside without delay. So he took his favourite white mare and rode up onto Blowingstone Hill (Kingstone Lisle) where there stood an ancient perforated sarsen stone. Those that had the skill could blow into this stone and make it emit a great roar-cum-moaning sound. Hence its name, 'The Blowing Stone'. Alfred took a deep breath and blew hard into one of the holes. He caught the place at just the right angle, and a great boom blew out across the Downs. From all over the county men were stirred from their beds and they knew it was time to defend their homes.
