We have all heard the expression, possibly said by some disapproving elder, “I said look, don’t touch, do your fingers have eyes?”
Yet another example of French ingenuity was the inventor Louis Braille who perfected what for the blind a system of writing and reading that would open up worlds for those who could not see. The original purpose was quite different from what we know today.
Developed at the request of Napoleon for a code system which would enable soldiers to communicate silently without light at night called “Night Writing” by Charles Barbier. It was not until many years later that while visiting the National Institute for the Blind, in Paris, that he met Louis Braille, who then refined it to give us the system that we have today.
