Geocache Description:

Important Note:
THIS SERIES WILL BE ARCHIVED ON THE 30th SEPTEMBER 2013 -
We would like to thank the many cachers who have taken the time to attempt these caches, it has made the challenge of setting this series a very worthwhile cause.

THIS CACHE IS NOT AT THE PUBLISHED COORDINATES BUT WITH SPECIAL PERMISSION FROM GROUNDSPEAK IS WITHIN 5 MILES OF THEM.
If you choose to search at the published coordinates, you won't find the cache but you will get wet!

Welcome to the Sailing Rings series.

This series has been created by a group of 5 Weymouth (UK) cachers to help celebrate the 2012 London Olympic sailing events being held in Weymouth & Portland.

The "Lords of the Sailing Rings" are:
Team Beavo - Aarron
j4pos - John
TEAMKWEST - Mike
stki40-50 - Steve P
Harleybandit600 - Steve H

The history:

It all started quite by accident....
Early 2011 John sent Mike and Aarron a link to a series around GC24238 which is north of Yarrow Point, USA. Have a look here on the geocaching maps page.

Welcome back - impressive huh? Well Aarron jokingly said to Mike & John when we were off caching somwhere "I like the link you sent through for the Yarrow Point caches, we could do something similar in Weymouth Bay for the Olympics next year" well it has snowballed from there. The idea quickly developed and we realised we would need some help. We soon recruited Steve P & Steve H and then we had our 5. After several get togethers to bash some ideas about and come up with the final plan (which has been tweeked and refined ever since!)....

About the series:

There will be a total of about 60 caches represented by the blue Unknown/Mystery cache ? symbols in Weymouth Bay in the approximate shape of the Olympic Rings and an additional final cache (this cache).
Each of the 5 rings will have 10 or 11 caches and a bonus cache.

To find and claim this cache you will be required to have solved, found and logged all of the caches in the 5 rings and their respective bonuses and to collect the required information to locate the final cache container. The amount of work you have to do to get the final warrants its 5* difficulty status.

Just 2 rules:

  1. You will not be allowed to log the ring bonuses until you have solved/found/logged each of the ring caches.
  2. You will not be allowed to log the series final (this cache) until you have logged each of the 5 ring bonus caches.

Clear as mud? If you are unsure please ask or email any of us above for an explanation.

The rings will published on the 31st March 2012 at 0900hrs.

There is an Opening Ceremony event to explain more and raise awareness of the series on the 10th March 2012 at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy, Portland UK.
GC3BGQ1 Sailing Rings - The Opening Ceremony.

The Prizes:
They will be Gold, Silver and Bronze engraved medals for the first 3 finders respectively. For security reasons, they will be presented at The Closing Ceremony (date tbc) or posted if preferred. The final cache container will contain medals of a lesser value.

Acknowledgements:
We would like to thank the following for their assistance in setting up this series:
