This cache has been archived.

katiegremlin: As I have limited time to maintain my caches, I have decided to archive this (and my other local caches), giving others the chance to place new caches in the locality.

I will remove the container within the next couple of weeks.

Thanks for all of the visits and logs.

Geocache Description:

One of a series of caches in or near Coventry's War Memorial Park - originally hidden for the Coming of Age 6 event on 18th May 2012.

On land that once formed part of Syvechale (or Stivichall) Common, and was owned by the Gregory-Hood family of nearby Styvechale Manor, Coventry’s War Memorial Park was opened in July 1921 as a tribute to the many soldiers from the area who lost their lives during the First World War (1914-18). In 1919, an appeal was made, and by public subscription over £31,000 was raised to fund the purchase of land from the Gregory family. This was handed over to the Council (or Corporation, as it was called), who developed the area into a fitting memorial, including the planting of many trees with appropriately inscribed plaques. A 90-feet high War Memorial was erected in 1927, constructed by local builder John Gray and dedicated by Field Marshall Earl Haig on 8th October 1927. Every Remembrance Sunday, the Memorial is open for the public to view the “Roll of the Fallen”, which lists all of the people of Coventry who were killed in the two World Wars and in more recent conflicts. Today, the park is a combination of landscaped gardens and various sports and leisure facilities, but its original purpose will not be forgotten.

The cache is a magnetic, camo-covered, plastic tube. It is a short distance from (but not at) the main vehicle access to the park, so please be aware of traffic when approaching the cache.

This cache has been placed with full permission of Coventry City Council's Ces Edwards (Head of Parks and Open Spaces), Ann Ackerman (War Memorial Park Manager) and The Friends of The War Memorial Park.
