Aboriginal people have climbed these headlands, swam in the rivers and lakes, crossed the sand dunes and walked these beaches for thousands of years. This park is within the traditional territory of the Birpai Aboriginal people, descendants of whom still live on this part of the mid north coast. The sea, tidal estuaries, rivers, heaths and adjacent wetlands provided a rich food source such as fish, shellfish, goannas, wallabies and berries.
Crowdy Bay National Park contains Aboriginal sites such as shell middens and campsites. The park continues to have strong cultural significance to Aboriginal people.
History since colonisation
Diamond Head is thought to be named after the quartz crystals that occur in the cliffs and give it a sparkling appearance from the sea when the angle of the sun is right. Further south, Crowdy Head was named by Captain Cook who sailed past in May 1770. The story goes that upon seeing a crowd of Aboriginal people on the headland he called it 'Crowded Head', from which followed the name, Crowdy Bay. Much of the park's coastline was mined for mineral sands in the 1960s and 1970s, resulting in the loss of original hind-dune vegetation. Following a commission of enquiry into the conflict between sand mining and nature conservation, the park was reserved to protect its significant natural and cultural heritage.
