Spawner Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Salvelinus: Spawner's old home has been destroyed by all the recent storms, so spawner is looking for someplace to retire. Look for the new location soon! However, Spawner is probably done producing fingerlings for awhile. Thanks to all those who helped Spawner develop new caches in our area!

Regards,
Salvelinus

Geocache Description:

Located in Centre County along one of the most popular trout streams in Pennsylvania. An easy hike will get you there but the cache is well hidden due to the amount of use the area receives. Park in the lot at the place sometimes called "Anglers Heaven" and start your walk from there.

The SPAWNER cache is special in that it contains a FINGERLING CACHE inside of it. If you have been thinking of placing a cache and know of a good spot to do so, then you can take the FINGERLING CACHE out of the SPAWNER and hide it.

NOTES:
Sometimes the FINGERLING CACHE will not be present due to the fact that a previous visitor may have taken it. I will make sure the SPAWNER produces new FINGERLINGS every few months.

If you find the FINGERLING CACHE inside of the SPAWNER CACHE then you can free it from its "redd" and find a new home where the FINGERLING will grow up (A redd is a nest built by a fish, usually a trout, to produce its offspring). Hopefully you will place the FINGERLING close to another stream, but any good place would be fine. I just have a few things that I need you to do.

1. Only take the FINGERLING if you know a good spot to hide it in Central Pennsylvania. Please do not hide it less than 5 miles or more than 50 miles from the SPAWNER cache. The book "50 Hikes In Central Pennsylvania" by Tom Thwaites is loaded with good cache locations nearby.

2. Please E-mail me at bweber347@adelphia.net once you have placed the FINGERLING CACHE. Include your e-mail, the GPS coordinates of where you hid it, and a really good hint to help me find it again. I will enter the new cache on www.geocaching.com and include your member name as the hider of the cache. Yes, the new cache will be under my control but any suggestions on names for the new cache and location descriptions are encouraged! Once the new page is approved, you can log the new FINGERLING CACHE as a find. I will eventually replace the FINGERLING CACHE you hid with a normal size cache, just as if it had grown up, and replace the FINGERLING CACHE back to the SPAWNER CACHE.

3. There are many items in both caches that are related to fishing and the outdoors. Please try to maintain that theme when exchanging items.

FINGERLING IS NOT AVAILABLE!

I got the idea for this cache from a similar cache hidden in Southern California called the BREEDER by yrium and his crew. It was hidden on July 1, 2001 and already has 3 offspring, one of them is now another BREEDER. You can find and follow the BREEDER cache by following this link.

I hope many of you take advantage of this cache in order to "Spawn" more caches in Central Pennsylvania. I will update this page frequently with the status of the FINGERLING and with descriptions of the SPAWNER'S offspring.

UPDATES: The initial fingerling found a new home and is called Laurel Run-First Cohort. It was placed on 4/21/02 by Team KP near Whipple Dam State Park.

Another fingerling has found a new home nearby and has been called Iron Eagle-Second Cohort. It was placed on 10/24/02 by WeBFree near Bald Eagle State Park. This cache outgrew this area and left the area during April 2004. Rumor has it that it will be moving to another location this summer.

The third fingerling to be spawned is now active and has been called Enchanted Forest-Third Cohort. It was officially placed on 11/10/03 by rgbisme and True Indigo somewhere within the beautiful Bald Eagle State Forest.
