Charles Owen originally came to this area as a prospector during the gold rush of 1858. When the rush finished he had made enough money to continue to live in the area without the need to continue to chase his fortune around the countryside. He also still recieved a small pension from the British as he was a vetran of the Crimean War. He lived in a small hut near the site of the original diggings and sold fruit to the new settlers who were arriving in the area.

Be aware, there are abandoned mine shafts in this area! Watch out for snakes. Do not attempt on days of extreme bushfire risk. Be aware, it is slippery in the mud!
