Little Baldy is Stoned Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

BisonChasers: ---
Thanks to all those adventurous cachers that have found their way up here for a smiley

Started off the day with a totally different agenda, but a ways down the road we checked the weather and noted the unseasonably cold and cloudy forecast near our destination and decided that shorts and a t-shirt weren't going to cut it for our adventure, so we hung a u-turn and brainstormed for a new adventure for the day
We decided to stick close to home since the forecast was much better and chose to check on our caches up in the Sheep Creek Wilderness Study Area near the Sleeping Giant

We placed five (5) large nano caches up her back in 2013 and have had a few adventures trek up here for a few smilies, and a few taking advantage of the opportunity to place their own caches up in this beautiful local
Unfortunately, today we discovered that three (3) of the five (5) were missing, which would explain the few DNFs
Found Driftwood on a Fossilized Beach in place, but the log was wet and moldy
Searched for Ladybug Mortuary but it was nowhere to be found
The 2-foot tall cairn that had held Cairn-tankerous had been dismantled and the cache was gone
Found Ridge Top Windbreak in place hanging in the tree
The stack of rocks where Little Baldy is Stoned was hidden was still intact but the cache was no longer under the pile

It is with great sadness that we are archiving all five (5) of these caches as we have come to realize that the wilderness is not the place for these nano caches

The Sleeping Giant area is a non-motorized recreation area located 30 miles north of Helena, Montana. The Sleeping Giant formation is a well-known landmark, visible from Helena. The area is comprised of about 11,000 acres of steep, irregular topography with elevations ranging from 3,600 to 6,800 feet. About half the area is forested, twenty drainages dissect the area providing solitude, and 12 miles of shoreline bound the Missouri River and Holter Lake. A diversity of wildlife species live here, including a thriving population of mountain goats that occupies the high outcroppings. Other common species include elk, black bear, bighorn sheep, mule deer, osprey, and golden eagles. A portion of the Sleeping Giant area is also part of the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail.

Road access to the Sleeping Giant Trailhead is seasonal, with the Woodsiding Road to the trailhead only being open from June 15th to December 2nd each year. This road is unpaved and will require 4-wheel-drive past the first couple miles. Near the top, it is unadvisable to travel in wet conditions as the two-track road is channeled in places and is very step.
